Don't jump on me for a dumb question, but would any of the railroads be interested in returning any of these to their fleets? Didn't NS recently purchase an old car for their fleet from Maine? Either in MOW service or for the business/inspection trains? Those seem to be pretty well modified when done, and as it seems, they look to be in fairly good mechanical condition.

I don't know if any railroads still do the MOW bunk cars these days. If so, then one or more of these might work. I really doubt there's any interest though.

As far as business/inspection trains? Well, these are more like RV Campers than Private Varnish, so unless they're looking for something to gut and put equipment in or do a total makeover for a business car, probably not.

Then again, I'd have never guessed NS would buy the car you mentioned either, so there's really no way to know for certain.

To the best of my knowledge NS was the last to use MOW bunk cars.

NS was still using MOW bunk cars in 2009. I photographed these on a siding near Cresson, PA.

I was told by an NS guy that the issues with camp cars these days is the lack of suitable sidings far enough away from active mains to meet new safety standards imposed on such accommodations.

The last siding I knew that was used for such parking, a stub of what was the old PRR grade through downtown Duncannon, Pa., had work train equipment parked on it instead of camp cars the other week as I drove by, in spite of a project under way nearby.

At least twice a year you can see NS parking a MOW bunk train on a mostly unused branch/wye/siding (I dont know what to call it.) by the Woodstock Rd Bridge in Chambersburg Pa.

Read the sales offer on the Ringling site. You have to submit a minimum of 10% or $3,000 good faith deposit before you can bid on a car or even inspect it. You also have to have an account in good standing with a Class 1 railroad and submit the final destination location before they will accept any bid. If they are expecting a minimum deposit of $3,000 they are not going to let these cars go cheap. Not to mention that rumor has it maintenance has been lacking for several yrs. There are no original interiors, they only thing the cars are good for are the trucks and couplers, they don't even have traditional HEP. The most likely buyer will be Class 1s for parts for their business car fleets or entities such as Alaska Railroad or Rocky Mountaineer

These are all the passenger cars that are listed in the auction. Note that there are cars missing, either because they've already been deaccessioned, or because perhaps there will be another auction at a later date; but, this does represent the majority of the fleet. I'll write up another post later on with the missing cars (probably sometime next week). Stay tuned.

I wonder approx what these will go for. I'm tempted to throw down a bid of like $5k on one of the N&W cars and see what happens.

I hope you're ready to own before you place that bid!

Of course not, which is why I won't actually do it. I can dream though.

We put in a couple of lowball bids on some flats (good MOW material) and the power/shop cars, with no illusions of winning those. They will be the diamonds everyone else will be after.

I wonder if what doesn't sell gets relisted, or scrapped. With the price of steel still rather low, I bet they will try to list them a few times.

I'd be very surprised if any of the cars attracted good bids as there was no time to do inspections ( and a weird clause that required a substantial bond be posted PRIOR to inspection) and with the possible exceptions of the flats and HEP cars these cars have few other applications short of major interior modifications.

Unless they're willing to sell them for whatever the market brings my guess is most will be sold for parts ( trucks, draft gear HVAC etc. have good value and are generally in great condition) with the bodies cut up for scrap.

Time will tell. Ross Rowland

Scrap steel is going for about $180.00 a ton . $210.00 if cut down to mill size , and that's from the scrap yard. Even higher if you deal directly with a steel mill. You've got to have bid high enough to make it unprofitable for the scrapers .

Just got an email back from FELD Entertainment basically saying to go screw myself for bidding and that the minimum bid for EVERY car is now $10,000.

Getting the feeling from this and the next to impossible to meet requirements their plan is to pretend to have offered these publicly with the ultimate plan to scrap everything and wipe it off the face of the earth and hope everyone forgets they ever operated the circus.
