Mr. Laepple, is that a cast bed or just cast-steel frames? (They would weld about the same but be fabricated differently).

ISTR a couple of instances where cast beds were severely damaged, and I think this led to the engines involved being scrapped. I don't think the Hudson in the Gulf Curve accident at Little Falls had a full cast bed but was certainly not repairable; the situation could be that damage substantial enough to knock a bed sufficiently out of line would 'total' enough of the other structure and other components on the engine.

Yeah that locomotive was almost completely destroyed. No weld could repair this engine. Note that this is the only NYC Hudson to be retired due to an accident; all others were cut up at the end of their service life. To give perspective, this wreck was in 1940, only a few years after the J3’s were built, but certainly near the height of steam on the NYC

The PRR M-1b has a cast steel frame. Nevertheless, the welded repairs had to be properly done, as they are in high-stress areas.

The NYC Hudson (5315?) had it's frame bent 180 degrees-- that's the #3 driver under the cylinders!

On a related note- does anyone know how the modifications were done on the Pennsy T-1 that was retrofitted with piston valve cylinders (no. 5547)? I don’t think they cast an entire new engine bed for it, but perhaps they did. If the original engine bed was modified with new cylinders and brackets for the Walschaert’s valve gear, that was some impressive welding for the time.

I just looked at a 1917 Northern Pacific Ry. AFE for purchasing a Thermite welding outfit for a roundhouse, the intended use was welding broken locomotive frames and driver spokes.

Another AFE was for a electric grinder for truing up tires after flat spots had been repaired by welding. Until they got the grinder they were cleaning up the welds by chipping.

The PRR thought enough of the procedure for converting cylinder blocks that they patented it.

All the details are now in the T1 Trust repository; Hugh, I'm surprised you don't have a copy of that patent at your fingertips.

Several generations of cutting and welding technology have come about since then, and it is relatively easy to jig and keyhole-weld metal of varying thicknesses with appropriate temperature control. This becomes more important when multiple passages and lines are being carried in a cylinder-block structure that is a new fabrication, part of the equivalent of a cast engine bed.

Modern Engineering and technology can solve just about any problem. I remember watching the Southern Railway thermite jointed rail...to create "welded" rail when I was a kid...back in the 1970's.

This past week, I was in the Pennsylvania Room at Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago's Union Station. In that room, is an impressive photo of five "officials" standing in front of T1 #6110, possibly taken at Baldwin's Eddystone Plant. The photo there in the lounge is large (note the couches for scale), but what is REALLY impressive is the size of the 4-4-4-4. She dwarf's those five men. This replication of a new T1 is really something!

That is a very rare Baldwin color builder's photograph. The film negative was taken on an 8 X 10" view camera; the film size being 8 X 10" Taken on Kodachrome film which retains very stable colors.
That is the 13 acre tender shop in the background. The use of color at Baldwin is very rare, the PRR T-1 and a Frisco 4-8-4 are the only BLW steam locomotives to be filmed in color, at least in my years of research. Color photos of BLW diesels are more common, but still quite rare compared to EMD and ALCO.

Kevin -

Thanks for the info. VERY interesting! The photo is a real eye catcher there in the lounge. The first time I saw it, it took my breath away! For that trip, I didn't have my camera with me. This time, I made sure that I did.

The one question not answered is, who are those 5 gentlemen posing with a live 6110? Baldwin officials? Guys from the Pennsy? Or a mix?

I've never seen any color photos of the Frisco 4-8-4, but would love to.

Did anyone notice the T1 Trust posted pics of a completed rear flue sheet this weekend?

Yup! Two tube sheets done, two boiler courses completed with a third on the way; they have been on a roll these last 6 months.

The Frisco color BLW builder's photo is 4-8-4 #4501 that was painted blue.
