The ELS just recently acquired a former Mile snow plow F7 B power unit from the IRM I think it was. So even diesels in museums are often let go of to turn over some cash for other projects.

Just to inform you the unit you are thinking of at IRM would be Milwaukee Road F7B 96-B or X-2, which to the best of my knowledge has certainly not been sold. The unit at ELS is former Milwaukee Road F7B 71-B or X-1. X-1 was located at the lake superior museum of transportation and was sold sometime back in 2009.

Thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression only two former snow plow B units survived. This is not the case however. There is more like three or four still kicking around.

Called Cresson Steel today to see when they could be inspected. Seems a museum in Ohio has called to make a bid on ALL 3 units and will be inspecting them upon arrival. He gave me the gentlemans name but did not recall what museum outfit he was with. I'm #2 on the list. Glad to see someone was on the ball to save these girls. Anyone wanna claim them?

James, If I had a place to put CP 1019 I would claim it. I did call NRE just to find out if CP 1018 the other F7B was still intact and of course for the time being it is. It would be nice if those to former CPR FP7 A units in Ohio could be mated with the CPR 1019 and 1018 for a true CP Rail F unit A-B-B-A set.

1019 and 1018 are the only other true CPR F unit B's left in existence. The third is in Canada and operational if I am not mistaken.

If the units sold to Cresson survive and someone picks up the NRE CPR 1018 then Valhalla.

No doubt. Glad to see any cab units surviving and people ready and willing to pick them up and give them some more life is excellent. Here's hoping.

These three units recently arrived at Cresson Steel so it may not be looking good for their future. From a post on the Montour RR board:

Several F units were recently sent to Cresson Steel - the end of the line for them.
All have SOU reporting marks - thus came from NS.

407 is an F7A built 7/1949 for CNW
It is lettered on one side "Texas Star Clipper"

9177 is F7A built 8/1952 as CN 9088. You can see under the number the designation A-17a.

1019 is a F7B built 2/1953 as CP 4462. It now says "slug" under the number and also has "hump service only" on its side.

They are in pretty poor shape-

Rumor has it that they (read: All 3) were bid on... unsure what the final outcome would be. Someone got there before I did.

Anyone know the current whereabouts of this F set or even if they're still together?

CNW 400 is on the Wisconsin Great Northern while a couple are at Cheyenne under the protection of Union Pacific. No plans for them are known but at least they are carried on UP's Historic Fleet...

FYI The 400 was scrapped back in 2012 from a book on the CNW F's that I purchased recently. It looked horrible in its last years. 401 is still in Cheyenne, supposedly it is fairly complete also. 402 and 403 went to royal gorge scenic railroad and operate as well.

The B unit was sold to the DL&S railroad back in May and it has left Cresson Steel.

The 1019 is in no danger of being scrapped.
