Today the Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City (NSRM-BC) received a new artifact, a Western Wheeled Scrapper 8 wheeled side dump car, built for 6 Companies, the construction consortium which built Hoover/Boulder Dam.

After construction of the dam, the car was sold to the Western Pacific Railroad, for maintenance of way service. The car was preserved by the Pacific Locomotive Association – Niles Canyon Railway. They declared it surplus to their needs and offered it to NSRM-BC… after a false start, and delayed by the onset of the virus, today the car arrived in Boulder City.

Tonight it sits on tracks it last visited 85 years ago, coupled to the Bureau of Reclamation locomotive purchased in 1936 to operate between Boulder City and the Dam… Both artifacts of local significance.

We thank the Niles Canyon Railroad for preserving this car and offering it to us.

Several were surprised at how large of car it was, given the build date.

Did they own more than one of those? Yes, that's a big car.

Six Companies had 66 side dumps, a mix of newly built, purchased used, or contributed by one of the companies included in the consortium... 40 were sold to the Western Pacific for maintenance of way... Some were still on hand when WP was merged into Union Pacific. We know of a second surviving car, held by the museum at Portola.

Any chance that we can see a larger image of the WP drawing?

Randy,
Andy idea what the WP number was?

We may have a data sheet on it in the WP files at
the Western Railway Museum?

According to: https://www.ncry.org/about/collection/m ... mow-11034/ the car was #MW11034. There was a Western Pacific mow equipment book on line but it seems to have vanished.

We own a similar but older car with much of the same linkage. Built in 1914 by Kilbourne & Jacobs and purchased second hand from General Equipment Co. (used RR equipment dealer??) by the Maryland and Pennsylvania in 1917 as their #302. M&PA sold it to SRC in 1971. Thanks Kurt Bell. It is still nominally serviceable and very occasionally used in its intended service.
