I'm not surprised to hear this as the goal was to get her running for the Santa Trains which start at the end of this month (just down the line a short hop to Oaks Park). I saw 4449 very recently at the Engine House and they were putting the finishing touches as wiring the number board and class lights, doing touch up paint work to the jacketing, stuff like that. I was told then that a steam up was less than 2 weeks away.
Sure seems like I wasn't lied to!

I saw 4449 steaming at the Santa train in Portland yesterday. She looked fine as always!

A video were the trails and rails coexist, what a novel concept. 4449 looks great as always, thanks Doyle. mktjames

There were a number of "bikers" pedaling past the 4449 and apparently not giving the engine a second look. It reminded me of one of David P. Morgan's excursions to catch the last of steam in an old TRAINS series. A CP, or possibly CN, commuter train went by a commuter standing on the platform and nonchalantly reading his morning paper. Morgan's photo caption was "Look up brother; she's steam!"

The 4449 sure looks good, and is well worthy of a pause for reflection.

My non-railfan friends pretty much think of my interest in these things as "how quaint".

I'm glad that the rebuild on the 4449 is finished but the sound of it's SP 3 chime has changed according to a video on youtube and it used to sound more correct in December 2010 when the steam locomotive had that whistle installed

The GS whistle that we acquired in 2010 had a worn spreader plate. It sounded good usually on the Holiday Express run but on both the mainline trips in 2011 and 2012 it tended to hoot badly due to the higher superheat temperature, and less so on the low speed runs. So we made repairs to it and possibly the tone has changed slightly, but it blows properly now. I haven't heard it hoot even slightly this time around.

SP&S 700 operated this weekend on a FRA waiver. It was for the Memorial Train Ride led by the SP&S 700 for the family and personal friends to PRPA founding father, Chris B. McLarney.

To anyone in the know (or at least someone more informed) - will there be more trips for the 700 before the waiver expires? Or was this one trip it? One could potentially imagine that the process to get the waiver would be somewhat of a waste to only run the engine for one short trip, no matter how noble the cause.

I looked 700 over under steam at the engine house on Saturday. One of the guys there said they had it under steam for some manner of photo shoot.
The volunteer didn't seem too hopeful for seeing 700 in steam again for a very long time. He said they can steam her up until January.

I'm not positive, but I have a hunch the waiver process in this case wasn't that involved. Likely not much more than a written request and possibly a standard annual FRA inspection.
