While working on the chapter about the CP&W and where the equipment is now I came across this photo online. I know that the No. 117 spent some time in Virgina before going to NJ. I've tried to contact the person who's name is on the photo but with no luck. Does anyone have any photos similar to this or any others of it from the time it left the CP&W in the 70's up until it arrived at the Pine Creek RR? I'm trying to paint a picture of it's journey and photos like this would really work nice to show how it almost didn't survive or any other info about its journey?

Thanks in advance for any info or help you may be ble to provide.

In the late 1980s, 117 and the cars were on display at a tourist trap (I think they sold Native American souvenirs) between New Market and Mt Castle Va. Right beside the I-81 southbound exit ramp of what is now Exit 269. I don't believe the photo you've posted was from that location as I remember everything being on rails.

Here's a satelite view of the location from Google maps:

The equipment was displayed at the "Tuttle and Spice General Store" at New Market, VA. I have a photo somewhere but will have to dig for it.

Hi Alan,
That would be great. This poor little locomotive sure did have an interesting journey and I'd like to document it as much as possible in the book.
Thanks
Andrew

Shoot me an email (jrmay@monmouth.com) and I can send you some pictures. I was part of the team that moved it to Pine Creek (chairman of the board at the time) and have some photos of the locomotive when it sat in Bayville, NJ. I also have a good story on its bell, its theft, its sale on ebay, working with the local police, and its return.

The photo above appears to be from when the locomotive was sitting in a field along U.S. 9 in Bayville, NJ, just below Toms River, right next to the current Blackbeard’s Cave mini golf and family fun center. I have family that lives near there and have passed that water tower and pole line along the highway in the background many times when heading to visit them from the Parkway.
