Post subject:  Common EMD MI questions.....

Sharing some information here from questions I received from preservationists over the last few months relating to EMD Maintenance Instructions. Probably some of these were generated as a result of preparations for the event in Spencer:

Q: I can't find any mention of a common 1940s EMD component in my indexes. Do the indexes show all the MI's?

A: No they do not. EMD put a disclaimer in the front of many indexes stating they are not a complete list. They tend to show what was common and current at the time the index was written. They are more a reflection of what was available in print, on the shelf in the service department at that date, not an all time list.

Q: So if they aren't complete, how do you identify MI's applicable to older equipment?

A: Unfortunately, you have to find one of the older indexes, and this is the big drawback of the EMD Maintenance Instruction index system. By the 1970s a lot of the older topics had been dropped out of the indexes. To identify an MI for 1940s or 1950s era equipment, you may need to find an index written in the same time period.

Q: Is there any all-time list or database of all of the EMD Maintenance Instructions?

A: None that I know of. It would be a great project for an organization to undertake with a grant as it would benefit much of diesel preservation community.

Q: What time span does the MI series cover?

A: From the 1940s to the present. The earlier comparable document was the General Service bulletin.

Q: How many numbered MI topics were issued?

A: It is difficult to say, somewhere over a thousand. There are internal MI's that were not issued outside of EMD, there were MI's that were available to customers but only handed out on request for a specific type of repair, and there were also some MI numbers that got "papered over" with later MI's duplicating their numbers for a different topic. In addition some early Modernization Recommendation topics were repeated or updated by later number series ModRecs.

Q: Are all MI books "the same"?

A: No they are not. Content differs based on when they were issued and who they were issued to. If a customer ordered a set of MI books, his set was much less comprehensive than what would have been given to an EMD service representative in the same time period. MI books issued in the 1940s have very different content, topics, and number series than those issued in the 1970s.
