The Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Steam Locomotive Trust is now on FaceBook!

No naysayers! It CAN happen (and in the US, no less).

That facebook page has existed since this past October. No doubt the project is possible given enough resources available to them, this should be a truism. The questions are if they have enough resources, money and people, and also if the project should be carried out. That is for time to decide, not a facebook page.

Obviously until the metal starts getting cut, I'll have my own reservations, but I am rather intrigued by the professionalism going into the project. Further, if you read through some of the comments, one will note it's generally been positive. If I recall correctly, it appears Nigel Day has weighed in as well...

Huh? On THIS forum? You are either joking, or in desperate need of this link: http://www.ehow.com/how_2049858_make-tinfoil-hat.html

I still feel the amount of effort going into this would be better applied to a design that would be more beneficial to the smaller tourist railroads found throughout this country, but I commend your efforts to get this off the ground and level of professionalism you all seem to have. Best of luck to you

In all sincerity, they could first build a scale, live steamer of a T1 as a proof of concept model to verify the computer results they have. A lot of engineering projects begin with models. For instance, scale aircraft are built for wind tunnel tests. How about that as a phase 1 goal for the project?

A 1" scale T1, complete with poppet valves, has already been built, by a late gentleman named Ed Woodings. A couple of photos:

I'm very impressed with the kickstarter campaign where they collected most of there money in a short amount of time for number plate and most of the folks are not train people.

Not trying to start a war here but in any situation if everyone has the can't do attitude then the project will never get done. It's the people who have the can do it attitude and the willingness to stick it out for the long that succeed in the end.

Thanks!!

I would disagree with the statement. I think sometimes with most people we who are in the trenches trying to get it done get tired of hearing the same folks say it can't be done, good luck, hope you make it and so forth. If I had 5 bucks for everyone who told me good luck with 1352 we would have the locomotive moved by now. And now that I have been sucked into the standard RYPN can't attitude vortex I'll stop while I'm ahead.

Thanks!!

Steven Harvey

I noticed a mention of this in a British railroad fan magazine under the news section a couple of days ago.
I can't help but wonder if the people reading that took it very seriously, as they have 'Tornado' so are therefore less likely to dismiss the idea...

The only thing is, a T1 is four Tornados crossed with a rocket ship. Now, when the Duke of Gloucester lads weigh in, that'll be a little different

when someone makes the Leviathon, anything can happen, it'll take more gusto, I am more worried about where it runs given CSX, but NS more friendly, just keep pushing the info out we'll see where it goes..

The difference in scope in question between the two is on par with the difference between rebuilding a skipjack and the USF Constellation, or a steam launch versus the Liberty Ship S.S. John W. Brown.

The former a wealthy individual can do solo with enough money to throw into the ship-shaped hole in the water. The latter requires such things as access to a drydock, a place to park her in the water with enough draught, a constantly-running pump, a foundation to look after her, etc. even if Mr. Moneybags writes out one big fat cheque to make it happen in the first place.

Now, that being said, there's allegedly a torpedo cruiser in a private individual's hands on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay............

Honestly, I'm a little afraid to "like" this page on FB, lest I start getting unsolicited mail from this group again.
