#1622 Pine Cavern to Amtrak #2713 to HEP #2984 (1978). Stored in 1995 and sold (when??) to Wisconsin & Southern #2984 and renamed Notre Dame.
This car is now owned by Wisconsin Great Northern and has been returned to its original name of Pine Cavern. From what I can tell, the car was resold sometime around 2014. Does anybody know when the sale took place? Thanks in advance!

ATSF Pine Grove was photographed on WGNS by Mike Roth on September 13, 2014 but hadn't seen anything on Pine Cavern as of yet (car not lettered when shot by Earl Leatherberry June 2015 but completely lettered by July 2016)...

Curious that little in the way of photographs has been posted of the WGNS...

Regarding which car is now owned by the Wisconsin Great Northern, 2 photos confirm for me that it is indeed the Pine Cavern and not the Pine Grove:

Bob Keenan’s photo of the car from 7/22/16 shows that the name Pine Cavern has been applied to the car, despite the fact that he lists it as the Pine Grove in the photo’s description line: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4521220

Earl Leatherberry’s photo of the car from 6/7/15, when zoomed in at the maximum resolution, shows that #2984 (Pine Cavern’s Amtrak HEP number) is stenciled on the car (in very small lettering) next to the vestibule: https://www.flickr.com/photos/23711298@N07/20501683353/sizes/o/

Sandifer lists this car as the Blue Grass (#208/Amtrak #2500), but Randall lists the Blue Grass as being scrapped in 1973. Could the car in Topeka be the Blue Grove (#209/Amtrak #2501)? Does anyone know the identity of this car?

87. Sleeper Blue Mott (1948) to Amtrak #2505 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Anbel Corporation. Does anybody know if this car went to Mexico, and if so, what numbers/names did it carry?
It was posted awhile back in the Passenger cars south of the border thread, but was not mentioned here, that the 2 Blue-series sleepers listed as sold to Anbel did indeed enter service in Mexico, but neither are listed in Robert J. Wayner's "The Cars That Went to Mexico" as SCD-owned cars. Instead, as best I can put together, both operated in charter service (perhaps with Bananafish Tours?) and eventually both became the property of charter/excursion operator Silver Creek International. After Silver Creek ceased operations, these 2 cars were stored in the middle of a street in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, along with Silver Creek's other cars, including the former WP dome sleeper buffet (club) lounge observation Silver Planet, a former Pullman/NdeM heavyweight business car (the Chicago, later NdeM, "Surviving Pullman" thread line item #375), ex-Amtrak, exx-SCL, nee-ACL 10RM-6DB sleeper Pinellas County, ex-Amtrak, exx-SCL, nee-SAL 11DB sleeper Sebring (as SCD #756 Oviedo), ex-Amtrak, exx-SCL, nee-SAL 10RM-6DB sleeper Savannah (had been SCD #753 Tlaxcala, but not listed as such), a former NdeM conference car rebuilt from ex-C&O coach #619, and former NYC sleeper lounge observation #10565/#10631 Sunrise Brook; there was also one of the Kinki Sharyo-designed, Mexican-built NdeM 68 seat coaches. On a spur inside an industry were several baggage cars which Silver Creek planned on converting to some sort of other configuration, along with the former Savannah, with almost everything else in the street. Looking at Google satellite imagery, these baggage cars do not appear to be the slightly shorter cars which I think were built by Schindler (or another unknown firm), and therefore might be some of the AT&SF baggage or baggage-RPO's which NdeM acquired in 1968-1969. Just a guess on my part, nothing concrete on that.

It was reported in the "South of the Border" thread that there had been fire damage to the WP dome Silver Planet, and that it and the former NYC Sunrise Brook were no longer present in the street with the other cars. Looking at the latest available Google Street View, not only are these 2 cars gone, but I'm sad to report that it appears that both of the Blue-series sleepers were also set ablaze, and that the windows are missing/broken from these 2 cars as well as what I believe is the Pinellas County (there might also be fire damage to this car) and the Kinki Sharyo-designed coach. These 4 cars and the rebuilt C&O coach are all the cars that are left in the street, but most of the windows are still intact on said ex-C&O car.

That being said, that does mean that the Blue-series sleeper which is listed by Steve Sandifer as located in a field north of Topeka is indeed more than likely the Blue Grass as he noted in his list, not the Blue Grove as I had theorized upon noticing that Randall listed that the Blue Grass was scrapped in 1973. Seeing as how the Blue Grass instead survives, that could mean that at one point it was slated to be scrapped, along with several other Blue-series sleepers, at the Topeka Shops or somewhere in the area by a scrapping company (I'm thinking M. Katch & Co., or maybe E.V. "Red" Stadler). Does anybody know who currently owns this car? Thanks in advance!

As owned by SCD, 5 of these Palm-series cars received the following names, as listed by Wayner in "The Cars That Went to Mexico":

Palm Lore became SCD #747 Campeche, acquired in 1988. Was this car acquired from Passenger Car Association, which had acquired it from Amtrak in 1983, or was there another owner in between the Association and SCD?

Palm Stream became SCD #748 Chetumal, acquired in 1988 from Anbel Corporation (Brownsville, TX). It is also worth noting that the Palm Stream had been damaged in a wreck on 5/18/1968 in Fort Worth (I don't have the train listed in my notes, but it was most likely the Texas Chief), and that the car was in storage for an unknown length of time afterwards; it should also be mentioned that it is listed by Madden's database as withheld from Pullman lease as of 6/12/1968. The car must have been repaired by circa 1970 to have been selected by Amtrak for purchase. Does anybody have shopping records indicating when this car was repaired? Thanks in advance!

Palm Summit became SCD #749 Villahermosa, acquired in 1988 from Anbel Corp.

Palm Top became SCD #647 (2nd) Barcelona (2nd), not #657 as I previously listed. Acquired in 1987. I don't think that it was acquired from Kirk Potter; as I had listed back on page #1 (as quoted above), that this car had been owned by Golden Arrow Tours/Golden Arrow Line, Limited (GALT; Gurnee, IL/Janesville, WI). Besides the Palm Top, Potter had also acquired in 1975 from Tuman Demolition (in Indianapolis) 10 ex-Amtrak, exx-US Army, nee-PRR Cascade-series prewar 10RM-5DB sleepers; 5 of which were later resold to the Pullman Travel Company (Wheaton, IL), 2 of which were later resold to the Smoky Hill RY & Historical Society (Kansas City), and 3 of which were later resold to the Railway Exposition Company (Cincinnati; which later morphed into the Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati [Latonia, KY]). The 5 Pullman Travel cars and the 2 Smoky Hill cars were then leased to Golden Arrow. Given this, that means that more than likely Potter resold the Palm Top to either Pullman Travel or Smoky Hill, which then leased it to Golden Arrow, and it was later resold to SCD. Also note that this was the 2nd #647 Barcelona. The 1st was ex-GN 4S-8DXR-1C-3DB sleeper #1271 Fraser River, which had already been retired, perhaps even before the beginning of the SCD era.

Palm Tower became SCD #750 Orizaba, acquired in 1988 from Anbel Corp.

Now for some info on these Palm-series cars which comes from the Santa Fe RY Historical & Modeling Society's "Passenger Car Reference Series Volume Five: Sleeping Cars of the Santa Fe". These 13 sleepers were originally also going to have Blue-series names, as follows:

Palm Arch was originally going to be Blue Aspen.

Palm Dome was originally going to be Blue Cove.

Palm Haven was originally going to be Blue Gill.

Palm Leaf was originally going to be Blue Haven.

Palm Loch was originally going to be Blue Lane.

Palm Lore was originally going to be Blue Loch.

Palm Path was originally going to be Blue Lore.

Palm Star was originally going to be Blue Pool.

Palm Stream was originally going to be Blue Sea.

Palm Summit was originally going to be Blue Spray.

Palm Top was originally going to be Blue Tower.

Palm Tower was originally going to be Blue Villa.

Palm View was originally going to be Blue Vine.

Some additional info from Wayner's "The Cars That Went to Mexico" and Randall's "RPC Annual, Volume 6":

Regal Arms is listed by Randall as sold to James E. Strates Shows at the December 1981 Auto Train bankruptcy auction, but is listed by Wayner as acquired by SCD in 1982 as #711 Golfo de Tehuantepec.

Regal Corps is listed by Randall as sold to Strates Shows at the 12/81 Auto Train auction.

Regal Court is listed by Randall as sold to Anbel Corp. at the 12/81 Auto Train auction.

Regal Creek was sold by Amtrak in 1983 to Dr. Henry Renfert. I don't know when it was acquired by SCD as #755 (Wayner normally lists the year of acquisition, but didn't for this car). Wayner also lists that records are unclear as to what the SCD name of this car was: it was either Andorra, Citlaltepetl, or La Ceiba.

Regal Elm is listed by Randall as sold to Strates Shows at the 12/81 Auto Train auction, but is listed by Wayner as acquired by SCD in 1982 as #712 Golfo de Darien.

Regal Gate is listed by Randall as sold to Strates Shows at the 12/81 Auto Train auction, but is listed by Wayner as acquired by SCD in 1982 as #710 Golfo de California.

Regal Gulf is listed by Randall as sold to Anbel Corp. at the 12/81 Auto Train auction.

Regal Stream is listed by Wayner as acquired by SCD in 1989 as #752 Golfo de Mexico. Does anybody know who acquired this car from Amtrak in 1981 as #800264? Thanks in advance!

Baker, freeing up the name Glorieta Pass, which has now been applied to the newly rebuilt 6 bedroom crew sleeper #63 (ex-AOE 2 stateroom-8 bedroom sleeper #800231 Monte Carlo, nee-B&O 10RM-6DB sleeper #7045 Opequon, P-S, Lot #6864, Plan #4167, 1950).

*I had previously noted that #52 was just a baggage car, but it is indeed a baggage-power car.

BNSF has renamed power car #51 (nee-#3931) Mt. Rainier, freeing up the name Snoqualmie Pass, which has now been applied to the rebuilt (as of 2014) executive sleeper-lounge #62 (#800291; ex-business car #2 Columbia River, exx-BN #A2 Columbia River, exxx-GN #A2 [no name], nee-Soo Line Minneapolis, P-S/Soo, Lot #W6990, Plan #W52770, 1957/58).

This leaves crew sleeper-power car #50 Stampede Pass (#800264; ex-BN #A23 Stampede Pass, nee-NP 10RM-6DB sleeper #364, P-S, Lot #6874, Plan #4140A/C, 1950, SP Cascade Pool) as the only power car with a Pass-series name*.

*To my knowledge, unless it has already been removed, which is a possibility. Does anybody know if the name Stampede Pass has been removed from the #50 and that the car has received a Mount-series name instead? If so, has the name Stampede Pass been assigned or applied to another car? Thanks in advance!

The Blue Grass is the Blue-series car that is on private property in Topeka, KS. It is on blocks with minimal underbody equipment. No trucks. It is almost completely covered by foliage so can be hard to see except in winter. Everything considered, the car is in pretty decent shape. It's difficult to get permission from the people who own it to go see the car. It's not visible from the road.

The Palm Leaf hasn't been owned by Mr. Bauman, et al, for some years, but was sold to a different group maybe 10 years ago. Sadly, it is possible that the Palm Leaf is the only surviving Palm-series car. It is still based in LA.

I'm pretty sure the Regal Creek is alive and well, stored under a canopy in TX somewhere along with one or two other cars, but I can't off hand find my stored pictures of the car to verify location.

If the date on the image linked to below is correct (February 2017), the car still bears the Pass name...

Thanks, Jerry! That answers my question. It will be interesting to see if the name is changed at some point in the future to match the other 3 power cars. If so, I wonder what name will be used? Perhaps Mount Hood, or maybe Mount St. Helens? Both of these would make sense both geographically and historically, given that the 2 SP&S lightweight Empire Builder sleeper buffet lounges had these names. And the 2 SP&S heavyweight sleeper buffet lounge solarium observations were named Mount Adams and Mount Jefferson, so those are also a possibility.

Another Update:

Domes:

Six cars, P-S, Lot #6836, Plan #7616, 1950, Turquoise Room short dome club lounge:

Ordered in June 1947 for Super Chief and delivered in December 1950. Eight 360-degree parlor seats and eight paired seats in the dome, 13* seats in the Turquoise Room (which always faced the diner), and 29 seats in the bar and lounge combined. In 1958*, the trucks were changed from inside swing hangar (ISH) to outside swing hangar (OSH), and the interior was redecorated. These cars were planned to carry Plaza-series names (as suggested by Pullman's car names committee), but these were not applied by Santa Fe. Post-Amtrak owners have applied these names to some of the cars.

*Randall lists 13 seats in the Turquoise Room, and Dohmen lists 12 seats. Randall lists the refurbishing as 1958, and Dohmen lists 1957.

#501 Plaza Laguna to Amtrak #9351. Stored in 1979 and sold in 1984 to Espirit de Corp Sportswear, later that year to Golden Gate RY Museum, then (when??) to Roy Thorpe, then (when??) to John Baldwin. Sold (when??) to Washington Central (later Columbia Basin) #104 for Spirit of Washington Dinner Train and named City of Seattle. Operation closed in 2005 after moving from Renton, WA, to Tacoma. Cars were stored on the Chelatchie Prairie RR in Vancouver, WA, before being sold in 2012 to Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande (SLRG) for Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay operation.

Eight cars, Budd, Lot #9646-129, 1954, 103 seat full dome lounge chair:

Ordered in September 1952 and delivered between January and March 1954. 57 chairs and 18 seat lounge in the dome and 28 seat lounge and nurse's room in the lower level. Remodeling of these cars for service on the Auto Train was contracted to Pullman in Lots #R7048-#R7058.

#509 sold in 1971 to Auto Train #521 and reconfigured to 51 chairs in the dome and 28 seat club lounge in the lower level. Sold in 1981 to Don Gage. Sold in 1984 to Delaware Otsego as replacement for burned #555, stored at Utica. Sold in 1985 to Holland America Westours and named Chena, outshopped in 1994 (#800122), listed for sale in 2003. Sold in 2007 to Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande as SLRG #509, renamed Cascade View, and assigned to Mount Hood RR.

#513 sold in 1971 to Auto Train #524 and reconfigured to 51 chairs in the dome and 28 seat club lounge in the lower level. Sold in 1981 to Delaware Otsego, outshopped in 1984 as NYS&W #501. Sold in 1985 to Holland America Westours and named Talkeetna, outshopped in 1987 (#800134), transferred in 2007 to Alaska Rail Tours. Sold in 2009 to Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande as SLRG #513, renamed Columbia View, and assigned to Mount Hood RR.

Lastly, Another Iowa Pacific Update:

As I reported the other day in the Iowa Pacific roster thread, full dome #513 on the Mount Hood RR in Hood River, OR, has been repainted into a minimized version of Mount Hood's red, blue, and yellow pinstripe scheme for use on the dinner train. However, it appears that the planned name Columbia View was not applied. No word on if the name will be applied at a later date, or if the #509 will also be painted.
As I posted in the Iowa Pacific thread way back in June of last year but forgot to post here, the #513 did indeed receive its planned name of Columbia View. At that time, I did not see the #509, so was unable to confirm if its planned name of Cascade View had also been applied. I had also noted that the #501 had been reassigned to the Mount Hood, and speculated that because of the presence of the #501, and that the #509 was not to be seen, that perhaps it had been reassigned to another Iowa Pacific line/service; although it was just as likely somewhere up on the hill in an excursion consist, or was inside the shop building. When I was in the area again in September, I do not recall seeing the #509 at that time either.

That sounds right. I believe it's 2 ATSF cars and one ACL or SAL car in either San Marcos of New Braunfels also a CNW box and T&P AC&F steel caboose at a restaurant/bar/club. I've got pictures at home - I'll look when I get home from work.

I had forgotten about these cars until your mention.

Cars in San Marcos at "The Old Mill" complex, under cover, are ex ACL (I think- name makes sense) sleeper Colton County (800513),

and a car (coach?) in Amtrak Striping with NCRY 2937 reporting marks.

Trucks on Colton County (The ACL Car) have NdeM stenciling on them.
My ACL is in quotes above for a couple reasons - the letter board's not long enough for "ATLANTIC COAST LINE" and it looks a near duplicate to the ATSF car.

I wonder if the Dr. Henry mentioned above was Dr. Henry Renfert, Dr. Renfert owned numerous cars, NKP 151 City of Chicago and NYC 658 Rippling Stream (both now at Austin Steam Train), Pullman 8-5 Clover Glade, now at Temple RR & Heritage Museum, an ex Southern heavyweight diner (in Taylor, TX now I think) and I have photo evidence of an ex Amtrak diner 6017, ATSF Regal Stream, and NP 484, a travelers rest car, later sold to Mexico

Bradley -

Thanks for your passenger car photos. Looks like rather than just a CNW box car, there might be at least three box cars there. Did you perhaps get photos of them too?

The car is ex-AMTK 2779 Colleton County, exx-SCL 6634, nee-ACL Colleton County.

Trucks likely salvaged from NdeM car that was scrapped, maybe the same source as the letterboard? Definitely shorter than what ACL would have used but not really that much shorter... maybe 6 feet?

The coach is ex-AMTK 4540, nee-ATSF 2937. NCRY is the reporting mark of North Central Rwy.
