Baggage Cars:

25 cars, AC&F, Lot #04-4269, 1955, baggage-express-messenger:

Ordered in November 1953 and delivered between January and April 1955.

#3663 to Amtrak #1152 to HEP #1253 (1977). Stored in 2009. Current status unknown.

#3667 to Amtrak #1155 to HEP #1260 (1978). Active.

With Amtrak auctioning off almost all the remaining Heritage cars on property, these 2 were acquired by BNSF. No info (yet) on what the plans are, but I would guess either automated (unmanned) track geometry cars or HEP generator cars.

That is a curious bit of news because neither of those 2 cars were on Sale List #2 from last November of 2018.

As information, most bidders on that sale have only been officially notified within the last few weeks which cars were awarded and donated.

I have (quite) a few bits of information and a few questions.

AT&SF 1342 in Luther, OK: modified later by Amtrak to a 31-seat buffet lounge dorm, reducing the dorm area when they installed a small bar area. After it was sold it was moved to Luther in 1982. It currently rests on a short isolated block of track just off the Stillwater Central (ex-Frisco) main line, used partly as an office. It can be seen from the adjacent road through some tree cover, and is visible on Google Earth.

#1370 Acoma was sold to Franklin Conaway in 1971, see the following page, halfway down section 3 (passengers): http://trainweb.org/carl/ACOMA2012/

According to "Car Names Numbers and Consists", published 1972 by Wayner Publications:
- P-S #1339-1344 (including the Luther car) were built as Dorm-Lounges and #1345 as a Dorm-Buffet-Lounge.
- "In March/April 1964 the twelve 'Indian' series sleepers were rebuilt to Plan 6007A, becoming 11 Double-Bedroom cars for Super Chief service (car names not changed)."

I have not read through all the Santa Fe section of this book, so there be more things I have missed. It seems to disagree about the exact date of several changes and conversions with what you have here, but I suppose that could be explained by start vs completion dates.

More detailed info on more recent history cars #3105 (as #113), #3199 (as #115), and diner #1492, all owned by the Oklahoma Railway Museum, on our website under the equipment roster pages.

Additionally the ORM has purchased from Amtrak their #2515 (ATSF #1617 Pine Arroyo) and baggage cars #1208 (ex-#3521), #1210 (ex-#3538), #1211 (ex-#3528), and #1250 (ex-#3660).

Now for questions:

Listed for auction on Ozark Mountain Railcar were "Santa Fe Coach #3083" and "#2400". These were from the recently-ill-fated Indiana Transportation Museum. Does anyone know what happened to these and the rest of the cars there?

I have heard Amtrak was scrapping some cars, specifically noted as some 1700s series baggage cars. Were these the only ones scrapped? Were all of them scrapped or just some?

The more I learn about these things the more questions I have than answers!

The auction starts tomorrow/Wednesday 06/05 at 7:00AM (presumably Eastern time) through 06/07 at 7:00PM, the two Santa Fe cars are included: https://ozarkmountainrailcar.com/auctions.php

According to the California Railway Museum's website:
#1474 Cochiti retired in 1968 and stored in Marceline, MO. Sold in 1970 to J.W. Kerslake for use at Bucksnort Jct, a rail-themed restaurant in Tea, SD. The restaurant closed in 1977 and #1474 was sold Sept 21, 1978 to the California State Railway Museum and stored. Restored to 1940s condition, opened as an exhibit June 17, 1994.

There are also photos on rrpicturearchives.net taken by our host of ATSF diner #1396 at said museum. I rechecked the CSRM's roster and it was not on there. Not sure what to make of that.

I realized I hadn't mentioned this unidentified car:

This is one of the 1947 P-S Plan #7503A 44 seat chairs, located at the Kankakee Railroad Museum (at the IC depot) as PPCX #450 and named City of Kankakee.

Does anybody know which of the 1947 chairs this is?

Ted, I believe that this car might be #2895. I've received correspondence from an individual stating that on a recent look at the car, the other side (the side butted up against the fence) retains the markings PPCX 4501. If that's correct, then that would match up rather nicely with the 2895, as that was one of the 1947 coaches and when sold to Amtrak was renumbered to 4501.

"#1395 sold in 1968 to Champlin Realty-Maple Street Station Restaurant, later (when??) to Verde Canyon RR (Clarkdale, AZ). Does anyone know the VCRR number of this car??"

According to this site:

https://sites.google.com/site/railwaypreservationphotoindex/by-railroad/atchison-topeka-santa-fe

Lounge-Dorm #1395 is now named Santa Fe Bell.
It can be seen here numbered as VCRR #116 in 2017:

and again here in 2014:

Diner #1493 is on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley RR (Belington, WV) named Mountain Explorer, as seen here:

#3506 to Amtrak #1025 to HEP #1244 (1977). Stored in 2003. Current status unknown.

This car moved earlier this summer to Austin Steam Train Assn, Cedar Park, TX - for conversion to HEP car.

Not sure if its been said on here but the Tennessee Central Operates the following ex ATSF cars. I think I have the following numbers correct. The Museum operates all the cars under their Amtrak numbers so I know those are right.

Baggage 3655 as TC 1160 (Museum Storage)
Baggage 3677 as TC 1266 (Normal Service)
Coach 2845 as TC 4711 (Normal Service)
Coach 2833 as TC 4717 (Normal Service)
Coach 2841 as TC 4719 (Normal Service)
Coach 2831 as TC 4733 (Normal Service)
Coach 2856 as TC 4739 (Normal Service)
Coach 2835 as TC 7628 (Normal Service)
