On the Lake Shore cars - a deposit was made on them but the balance was never paid or the cars never moved. After a 'few years' LSRHS gave them a 'pay up or forfeit your deposit' notice, and the contract was terminated. So they are, at least for the current days, still Lake Shore cars without a lien on them.

"Bankruptcy trustee places former Iowa Pacific equipment on sale

More than 100 pieces of historic rolling stock, both passenger cars and locomotives, are up for sale as part of bankruptcy proceedings resulting from the receivership of Iowa Pacific Holdings. The equipment belongs to Heritage Rail Leasing; it and the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad, principal subsidiaries of Iowa Pacific, were involuntarily placed into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and are being sold by Tom Connelly, the Trustee appointed for HRL. According to a press release, the equipment is at various locations throughout the United States; some may not have been moved in years, and a lengthy list of conditions and disclaimers apply. Buyers will be responsible for moving any purchased equipment. For more information and a list of the equipment for sale, contact the Trustee at: Tom H. Connolly, Esq., P.O. Box 68, Lafayette, CO 80026-0068; tom@connollytrustee.com; or 303-661-9292."

SL&RG 1100 is former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio F-3A 805A, modified by Paducah for commuter operation (but those things can be undone, e.g. the octagonal grates along the top edges). It would be nice if Monticello or IRM could pick it up, $30k is not a fortune for a runner. I don't know of any GM&O units preserved, definitely none at IRM despite GM&O (former Chicago and Alton) having a lot of track in Illinois (I grew up two miles from one of their branches).

LS&I 18 was included in the previous round of sales, but the hefty price tag has yet to attract any takers. The listing is still up on Ozark: https://ozarkmountainrailcar.com/railEquipment.php?itemId=1994&category=Locomotives

Also of note is the New York Central diner "Lion Gardiner," which narrowly evaded the torch back in 2015.

Is that correct? It says it is in Ohio, I was under the impression that Colebrookdale RR in PA owned it. Indeed, they have a page devoted to its restoration, perhaps it is dependent on raising the money and purchasing it.

Yes, it is in Ohio, on stands in extremely poor condition. One of the worst heavyweights I have seen as far as rust goes. I can't see it being worth it for anyone to try and restore this car, sadly.

Overall, the prices are all still way too high for all this equipment. I will wait patiently for the fire sale.

Ironically, it would be an actual fire sale in this case as the LG was burned by vandals when it was on the CMRR, that is where a lot of the rust comes from. Hopefully CRR will wait for the fire sale also, it is the last remaining NYC heavyweight diner.

The prices on the passenger cars vary A LOT, $1,000,000 for a full dome?

The ex-ATSF and ex-GN Budd-built full domes command a lot of money. Most have been in continuous operation with tour outfits and tourist lines for the last 35-40 years since Amtrak (or Auto-Train) got rid of them and have received multiple rebuilds and upgrades. They will probably continue to be quite popular. The ex-MILW Super Domes and the ex-SP 3/4 domes (I think I saw one of each on the sale list) never had the same post-Amtrak popularity for various reasons.

I wonder if $1m is what IOU Pacific valued them as for collateral when they were trying to get more loans to stay afloat. This one, #511, is a former Santa Fe car, later Auto Train, and I think it was used on the Hoosier State when they took over operations from Amtrak for several months.

Why are the ex MLW super domes not as well liked as the other full dome cars?

Probably sounds crazy but once you start getting near the 1M mark, would it not be cheaper to simply build a new full dome car off the frame or chassis of another passenger car.

Maybe these two reasons:

1. The Milwaukee Road super domes were built with a lower height of the dome above the normal roof-line. This was said to be due to the overhead wire of the electrified portions of the road.
2. Built by Pullman-Standard and not by Budd (GN and AT&SF).
