Hi,

Thanks.

Even before general use of computers, checksums were needed.

One more small correction, Southern donated the car directly to the museum, not sold, and it was never owned by Amtrak, despite having an Amtrak #2850-series number assigned. (As posted on the "Surviving Passenger Cars in the United States" group on Facebook.)

A few more minor notes, also from the "Surviving Passenger Cars in the United States" group on Facebook:

Stanley Johnson wrote:
Barren River was involved in a Humming Bird wreck in the late 60's and was scrapped in Columbia, TN, along with the rest of the damaged train set.

I had noted the L&N #3412 Barren River as wrecked and (most likely) subsequently scrapped in 1968 (sourced from Randall), but with no specific info on which train, where, or exactly when. The car is listed by Madden as being withheld from Pullman lease as of 12/20/1968, so that is either the wreck date or retirement date.

Maison Young wrote:

As previously noted in this thread, the Pearl River is listed by Randall as retired in 1976 and sold to Allen Kempe in Louisville.

Maybe not. Keep in mind that was the bitter end for Pullman, from Wikipedia:

"Operations of the Pullman Company sleeper cars ceased and all leases were terminated on December 31, 1968.[11][13] On January 1, 1969, the Pullman Company was dissolved and all assets were liquidated."

So the lease could also have been terminated because there was no longer going to be an entity to lease it to.

This may be a bit off the mark, but I don't want the info to be lost: SOU 702, a 1941 P-S bag/dorm/Jim Crow coach was scrapped by FWRHS at New Haven, IN in 2008. It had been out of service after the 1980 season for NKP 765 due to electrolysis and the car frame. Very common.....The car was donated by Attorney Stanley Nylan of Atlanta in 1979. He was a wheelchair user and thought the baggage door would be good for his handicapped access. He told us that the car was used on one or more Southern steam excursions in the 1970's. A fire of unknown origin consumed the car resulting in its scrapping on-site.

So what was the 702 used for between it being taken out of 765 tool car service in 1980 and it's scrapping in 2008?

Southern 702 sat unused at the former CASAD Army Depot for over a decade, until the fire and subsequent scrapping in 2008. On its trips to TP&W, Argos, IN and the INDEPENDENCE LIMITED - the 702 was a very quiet and smooth riding car.

Few questions,

Did the fire occur in 2008, or earlier? And when was it moved to CASAD? Stored at Ft. Wayne before that?

Thanks in advance.

Ted, I don't believe 827 was ever an MRLX property. I think it flowed through from ITAX to Gateway.

On a side note this was part of the trade SARM made for SOU/CofGa 665, "Fort McPherson".

Thanks, Charlie.

I suppose one thing I don't have a clear grasp of is the corporate histories/relationships between KRSX, ITAX, Gateway, and MRLX, so that would lead to errors in the notes as to what belonged/belongs to whom. Adding to the confusion is how various owners use MRLX marks due to UMLER, even for just a COT&S.

Shenendoah River is still with TVRM although may be going to new home in not too distant future. It and the Holston River came to TVRM in a trade deal with Old Kenner. Holston River and Shenandoah River where apparently owned by Nippert from 1982-1987 when they went to Old Kenner. They came to TVRM straight from South Philadelphia in 1987 so it looks like they were stored there for five years so that explains their condition.
Update: car was scrapped at TVRM in March 2020.

So in your update yesterday, was it Holston River or Shenandoah River that you were referring to being scrapped in March 2020 at TVRM?
