Charles Heisler, inventor of the Heisler locomotive, grew up in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Does anybody know if he had any connections with Lima Loco and Machine which was about 15 miles north of Wapakoneta? It seems very odd that the Heisler design would originate so close to Lima and yet have no connection.
(There are no Heislers living in the area now. I have lived in Wapakoneta since 1976.)
Charles Heisler left home in his early 20's and seeked employment at the Brooks Locomotive Works in Dunkirk, NY. Later worked for the Dunkirk Engineering Co. His first experimental Heisler engine was then constructed in 1891. It had a ramsbottom boiler and a cylinder setup nearly identical to that of the Gilbert engines. He moved around several times in his life but to my knowledge he was never associated with Lima Machine Works....later on April 21st, 1892, Lima Locomotive and Machine Co. was formed...etc
Scott Wickert
Shay #23 "The Rebirth"
