Also, there were some groups that did a "full steam ahead" restoration study. Do they still exist?

We could get some of their ideas and work with the FEBT to put them into action.

Perhapsthey'd also be interested in saving that coal/boney trestle.

They're called the "U.S. Department of the Interior" and the "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." Last I heard, both still existed. My own copies of both study reports are filed away in the Md. Rail Heritage Library, but neither addressed where to get monies for the propositions.

Well why not build a luxury resort like the one at Raystown Lake in Rockhill and/or Mt. Union? And advertise it on billboards nationwide, along with the EBT?

That's another $50 to $300 million of PRIVATE money at a minimum, because unlike, for example, Maryland and its Rocky Gap Resort, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania doesn't seem inclined to spend public money to compete with private resort/tourism dollars.
Wouldn't you rather that money go towards acquiring the EBT, and some private entrepreneur put money on the Raystown Lake shore?

Edit: I misread; you seem to be under the mistaken impression that there's ALREADY a "luxury resort" on Raystown Lake. No. At best there's a somewhat decent campground calling itself a "resort;" users and reviewers think otherwise.
To make this kind of idea work, you need a REAL resort, with things like horseback riding, spas and salons, hot tubs, Olympic-sized swimming pools, ski lifts, fine dining, luxury suites, elevators, bars, massage rooms, gyms, golf course, tennis courts, etc. That's the Greenbrier, or White Sulfur Springs, or Berkeley Springs, or The Homestead, or Wintergreen, or Capon Springs, or Bedford Springs, or places in the Poconos.

It's been over two years.

The crickets have died of boredom.

Any update to this saga? Or has it just......... you know........ disappeared?

Here is an article regarding the sale from the NRHS website. It appears the sale price is $8 [million?] and EBTPA has raised $2M so far. They need to have the rest by the end of 2013.

I was in Mt. Union on Friday.

There are coal cars stored in the original EBT Mt. Union yard and on the track that leads to the NS interchange.

What is the name of Salone's operations here?

FWIW, as part of the team that did the "full steam ahead" study back in the 90's, we're still very much around. Some of the key team members from the Southwestern Heritage Preservation Commission are still around as well - we worked for them.

The story of what happened after that study was released - and how close it came to being funded, deserves more fair treatment than what it typically gets. The state's approach to the match, and how it was to be valued against the property donation, left the K family rather hanging in the wind. It added to the level of distrust rather than ever resolving it.

The key conclusion of the study that it had to be split off to it's own trust - actually has happened, but it was a test for a fixed period that has now expired. The concept is solid, what isn't solid and tends to be a moving target is the valuation of the railroad and how it is transferred to a trust - which may or may not include a lot of surrounding property that people tend to forget about that at one time was all part of the East Broad Top.

The other concept that survived was a solid on-site involvement with the FEBT, that has maintained beyond the rail operations to help stabilize the physical site.

It may sound rather Monty Pythonesque at this point, but "it's not dead yet".

Wasn't that the old operator? The lawyer...

Mt Union Connecting (IIRC) is the standard gauge operator of a section of EBT track from NS to a few industries near Mt Union. Not the entire EBT.

^Yes, I know that. Nothing has moved to those industries. Only the main line in the Mt. Union yard has been rebuilt.

The main past the new bypass is brush covered.

There is NO Mt Union Connecting railroad anymore. That company was dissolved a few years ago. The current operator is the East Broad Top Connecting under Larry Salone.

That makes two of us....

Good that they're getting revenue in from car storage....but it makes me wonder why the K's never delved into that business....could have offered a double dip...store cars, scrapped cars that are obsolete.

And I'm not just talking recently...but over the decades.

They were doing it last summer too.

Definitely a surprising site to see a bunch of hoppers sitting in Mount Union.
