For your information, here are two new pages of information 'from the source':

http://www.csrail.org/index.php/the-plan/faqs

http://www.csrail.org/index.php/the-pla ... -questions

I trust further discussion, within this thread at least, will remain civil.

I suspect this was linked previously, but to keep the info all together, here is the News Release from the University of Minnesota dated May 22, 2012:

And the only thing lost is the historic locomotive. Dumb idea.

How will this locomotive be "lost"? Even if the locomotive is extensively modified (see the photos comparing an SAR Class 25 4-8-4 and the highly modified Class 26 4-8-4 on their pages), the effort required to return the locomotive to stock condition would probably be no greater than the effort required to restore it from its present deteriorated condition. None of the modifications are apt to be "irreversible".

The website specifically states that any "stock" parts removed during the retrofit will be stored and preserved.

Do you mean this historic locomotive? The one that was rusting into the ground while all the preservationists did nothing? I for one am glad to see the locomotive stabilized.

If they get her running and make an attempt on the record, they probably will do it in a location far enough away from the lineside spectators that those spectators won't have to wear goggles.

David -- Ross is referring to the goggles he will be wearing as he drives the locomotive to the record. There was a thread on that precise topic a couple of weeks ago.

I would also like to mention here that there have already been two fairly well-detailed threads discussing the details of this project, plus at least one on the torrefied fuel. There is no need to repeat the defunct-equine bludgeoning from those other threads, and I request that anyone feeling the need to comment on some aspect *other than the two Web-site updates* please read those older threads to see if their point has already been made.

As for the goggles remarks, I'd MUCH rather hear more about him putting them on to head up the Greenbrier Express.......

And there's also the little matter of how much he's going to have to bribe--excuse me, "invest in"--the company before his being offered that prime seat is a likely prospect.

Let's put personalities aside for a moment, and look at facts.

Try making a list of steam engineers who have experience running large locomotives at speed for long distances. Obviously there are others out there, from the likes of the UP program, 261, 4449, 700, etc. But it's a fairly short list, and Ross is definitely on it. I'd say his qualifications alone give him a reasonable shot at it.

Mike Rowe, there are two F7s over in new Jersey that are about to be truly "lost". Go get them!

"Gentlemen" (and I use the term strictly by courtesy in the present context):

If you want to discuss Ross Rowland or his propensities, please start an appropriate thread with an appropriate title. Then you can crap, ahem, carp away to your heart's content.

I, for one, have no scores to settle or perceived idiosyncracies to attack, and I do object to people violating the Interchange guidelines on their way to attempting to stir up -- troll up might not be too strong a word -- "more of the same". I did not introduce this topic as an excuse for ad hominem anything.

Personally, I thought Ross mentioning the goggles was intended as a tongue-in-cheek reference, not as self-aggrandizement. To Mr. Wilkins, I apologize for the whoosh!; I was not watching for sarcasm. I'll be more aware next time.
