Thanks for the great photos Stephen. The view of car 65 outside shows the car in red primer so the color looks a bit bright. As of today the window sashes have been removed and their exterior painted in boxcar red. The doors, window sashes and hardware on the original #65 were all painted to match the car body so we are doing the same. The window frames will be top coated and the windows put back in this weekend. We also plan to build the ice bin frame this weekend. It will go in the corner, to the right of where the cans are in the interior shot.

As Stephen noted, two original milk cans are in the car. The handles have brass tags with the farmers names and the necks are marked with a 7 to indicate that both cans were shipped from Alna Center which is near milepost 7. The station is one that has been rebuilt on the restored line so the cans will be traveling in the new milk car from their original stop as they did 90 years ago. The surrounding land at Alna Center is still owned by the same families that shipped the milk cans.

Work on the trucks will continue this weekend as well. Volunteer Brendan milled the brass bearings Monday. Another volunteer, Jonathan will mill new bearing keepers on Friday so the brasses can go in. As noted the wheelsets are original. Much of the archbar truck components are original WW&F as well having sat on a farm for about 75 years.

It is amazing how bits and pieces of history continue to find their way back to this railroad...

This is video shot on my cell phone as 65 was being spotted back in the shop after coming out for some photos and to move number 9's tender tank into the bay for work. http://youtu.be/0qYZMX2RR6k

This is the kind of stuff I would like to see more of on RYPN.

Do you have a photo of the prototype? Great work guys, wish you were closer.

Frisco,

Thanks for the kind words. There is a (poor) photo of the original car back on page 1 of this thread in a Stephen Hussar posting dated March 28th.

Car 65 is now on display beside the town pier in downtown Wiscasset! A ribbon-cutting ceremony with town officials and museum volunteers took place the afternoon of July 4th. Displays within the recreated milk car include a functional ice bin, original milk cans, new and historic imagery, and the history of the WW&F and its connection to Wiscasset. Car 65 is open daily for self-guided tours. The first photo shows Sprague's Lobster Shack in the background...the sign says there's more than one whole lobster in every roll, and take it from me it's true! Come on up for a lobstah' roll and check out Car 65! :)

Is a lobster roll anything like a log roll or cow tipping?

A lobster roll is a bit of Maine heaven on a hot dog bun!

Well, not the "hot dog roll" that most of 21st-century America knows, at least.....

Man, if I new the dedication was today I would have tried to make it! I was in OOB for the past few days, but we couldn't make a run up to Alna due to VERY stubborn siblings who would rather see a train turned into their next mountain dew can.... I was lucky enough to make the stretch for MNGRR and Monson No. 4. I'll keep planning for my post-senior year trip up to Maine.

Do not mock cow-tipping. An ancient and venerable tradition (so I'm told).
