Post subject: Nashville roundhouse question
PostPosted: Tue Dec 01, 1998 11:45 am

On my recent trip via Sothwest Airlines, the route of the perky flight crews, I had a layover in Nashville. On final approach to the city's airport I was glancing out the window and my eyebrows popped up when I got an overhead look at a complete roundhouse, turntable and backshop complex at a rail yard somewhere near the city.
Can any Tennessee folks clue me in as to what I was looking at?
Well, I'm not from Tennessee, but that's the former L&N roundhouse. In October 1993 the L&N Historical Society did a night photo session of SBD (ex-L&N) 1066 on the table. I found the negs, but the slides are eluding me at the moment.
There's a similar setup at Boyles Yard in Birmingham, if it's still there. In October 1988 we posed an SW1 in L&N's black-with-yellow scheme on the turntable there - that one showed up in a lot of the magazines.
JAC

What is the status and, more importantly, the prognosis for the facility?

It's hard to say. In 1988, the big impetus for the Birmingham night shot was the news that it was scheduled for demolition. When I moved away in 1993 it was still in use by the car shops.
The Nashville roundhouse was still in use in 1993 as well.
I haven't heard anything about either being in jeopardy, but a capital improvement project for either yard might change things.
JAC

Not to change the subject, but is the turntable still in place at the roundhouse in Asheville?
