Non-operating; but, I think that the California State RR Museum has an example of a 201A awaiting future display. When the SP modified and repowered its E2A cab unit with 567 engines at its Los Angeles general shops in the 1950s, the 201A engines from the unit went to a scrap yard in the LA harbor area. One of these was obtained decades later by CSRM.

If this is the V12 Winton they had, it is now at IRM. It was sent with the Santa Fe 543.

CSRM had two 12-201A engines from the same E-unit, they sent one to IRM, they still have the other. 2012 is the 75th anniversary of the E-units.

Here is the 12-201A as delivered to IRM in late summer 2009. Does anyone know if the other CSRM engine is more complete?

The other CSRM engine was in about the same shape when I inspected it in the backshop a few years ago. Both engines had their aluminum valve covers removed at some time resulting in the top deck rust.

IRM also has a Winton in D&R #14, a 1937 600 HP SC with a 8-201A engine in it. I think that this is one IRM earliest switch engines.

This thread is a prime example on why I visit the site as often as I do. Thanks for all the information!

Winton 201A engine sound, for anyone interested. This appears to be correct sound for these engines, the stack "talk" is somewhat similar to a Cleveland Diesel 278A.

Had this saved on an older computer that I was cleaning out. Don't know where it came from or why I saved it....!

Cool photo. It's surprising how little resemblance that bears to a 567.

The 201A look alot more like the Cleveland 248/278 series then any EMD.

Which is the model progression that went into USN Fleet Submarines: 201A, 248, 248A, 278, 278A. I would like to find out what happened to the 201A training engine(s) the USN had, probably all scrapped now but who knows....

Knowing the DoD, they probably have a warehouse full of NOS ones someplace.

An interesting note about that is the Army/Navy still holds the supply contract for all overseas ships for 278A parts, which Hatch and Kirk is the OEM of now.

I am really curious about the Kettering paper that covers the history of the 201A and the development of the EMD 567 engine, as referenced before by Preston Cook and in some other places I've looked. My dad, a retired railroad diesel mechanic, remembered reading a copy that was on file at the shop where he worked though he didn't think at the time many years ago to make a copy of it. I've looked and looked online and haven't found where any copies are available electronically or otherwise...

Does anyone know of any way a person could get a copy of this? I'd truly enjoy reading it - thanks!
