But even as the water receded, I looked up the dry dock, towards the huge yard assembly buildings, to see a new bow section, already assembled, coming down the dock, somehow perched on two of these short heavy duty flats, with a couple more as spacers, pushed by a Alco RS unit.

Thanks Bob. Would be interesting to know if any photos of those short heavy duty flats there at Portsmouth, VA exist. Also, if they were second hand cars or specifically built for that facility.

Back in 2007, I posted a thread entitled "Short Gun Flats". In it I mentioned short 30' gun flats and questioned whether any had been preserved. David Hamley then started this particular thread in 2012 and a rather lengthy discussion resulted. Now comes this photo from John Eagan taken in April of 2017:

The short 30' flat car (probably ex-PRR) that IATR had made into a snowplow obviously still existed at that time. What's interesting is that John pointed out that the car was going to the former owner of the IATR, David Johnson's private spur! So, the question from 2007 has been answered; at least one of these cars is apparently going to be preserved!
