With respect to the ACL car, how does the information below connect to the situation "on the ground"? today?

After watching the abortion of the grant at our station first hand, I would guess that the 1 million will get you a general cleaning, washed windows and maybe a coat of paint. The original bid will come in at half a mill but with contractor changes that will be approved by who knows who, the extras will eat up the remaining half mill. But don't complain to the government, because they just don't care.

Later!

A photo of the two wood cars at the station. I hope these get saved by someone who cares and can make a good historic application with them. To my eyes they are in great shape exterior wise.

Calling Strasburg Railroad!

Didn't realize there were TWO cars there, particularly a coach and Combine (looks like it could be a home job though?).

SRR would be the best place for them to survive, but I know they are back-logged on equipment restorations as is.

The acquisition of two more closed vestibule cars would give them a 5 car set for winter time service. (they have the 2 RDG Coaches and the WM wood Car)...and again, a combine to boot, if it in fact is one.

One can only hope they don't get trashed.

I don't see them getting much money out of any of them, considering their current state (except the ACL car, that might raise a bit). If anyone would even want to just cosmetically restore them, they'd have to get them at rockbottom price to ever make it worth it.

From what I remember of the '70s, I don't think I ever did a Latter Day Saint.......but anything is possible.

I think it's more a Shatner /Canadian thing. Ears normal, just getting hairier at my stage of life.......although I do encourage rational thought.

The ACL diner is going up for auction:

Quote:
Design plans that would transform the train station into a modern senior center and tourism bureau are 90 percent complete, county engineer Joe Gibbons said. And the dining car, which was once attached to Palooka's Diner, will soon be auctioned off - ideally before construction begins on the train station.

"We want to get started within the next six months," said Andrew Reilly, executive director of the Luzerne County Office of Community Development.

Auctioning off the dining car would raise more funds for the $2 million project, county officials said, and its removal would provide more space for on-site construction equipment.

L.A.G. Auction Services, which holds a two-year contract with Luzerne County, is currently preparing a marketing presentation for county officials. Once approved, L.A.G. will spend at least 30 days advertising worldwide. The auction will then take place at Market Street Square and Wilkes-Barre Boulevard.

Leo Glodzik, owner of L.A.G., said he will not start researching the dining car until his marketing plan is approved. Until then, he is not sure how much the antique dining car might fetch. Neither are county officials.

"It's a rare commodity. I would think it's hundreds of thousands of dollars if you'd buy new," Glodzik said. "Some buyers might put it back on the rail; maybe a wealthy person would just want to use it as aesthetics. Some people might want to make it another restaurant, or someone might use it as an addition to a hotel."

I suggest paying attention to the comments below the article for further details.

Has anyone got a reasonably current photo of the ACL diner that they can post?

Don't get too excited abouit these items. I have dealt with previous items on the property. There is (suprise!) politics involved with this property especially being in Luzerne county. WARNING! People have been dooped here before. I won't say much more than that.

The ACL car is going to be auctioned on May 17th. You can find the listing at www.lagauctions.com

They refer to it as a diner. Is it really or is it a lounge car?
