"Kurt Cobain" (from the comments in the first photo) should have retrieved his car, I'll bet CP wanted its flat car back. Seriously, a lot of trouble/cost to ship it back from Manitoba only for it to be cut up.

Here are two photos of the car as GM&O instruction car 66658:

http://rr-fallenflags.org/gmo/gmo66658goa.jpg

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=3227168

The car in the blue & white "Firefly" scheme is visible in the distance on Google Street View. Does anyone have current interior and exterior photos?

In the photos linked above, the car seems to retain its wood-frame windows vs. the thermopane windows fitted to the Azela.

Through a local IC/GM&O passenger fan, I found out that the car in Jackson is the Matanzas - was originally used on the Havana Special, then ended up on the GM&O - could be a sister car to the Azalea? It's been a few years ago since I have been through the car, and I recall it having sections, and maybe a drawing room (could have been a lounge). Any info on it?

Scrapped Cars:

Inquired about a number of various cars with unknown current whereabouts over in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, and received info concerning the following 3 from Isaac Pena. (None of these 3 have been discussed here before.)

Lake Bruin (Lot #4888, Plan #3585A/K, 10S-1DR-2C, 1925, 20th Century Limited)--retained (1948)--sold to the "Adolph Investment Corporation" (1969) apparently this was for usage as a diner/bar in St. Louis which opened at that time, and went through a series of owners/names through the years, last owner was Eugene "Gunner" Jackson, as "Gunner's Palace Car" diner, from circa 1988 until the Floods of 1993...during which, the car was submerged, the interior was highly damaged, and it was subsequently scrapped in-situ

Willow Trail (Lot #6214, Plan #3583A, 7DR, 1929, 20th Century Limited)--retained (1948)--sold to Terminal RR Association of St. Louis (1953) reportedly was then used as a business car, and was scrapped at an unknown later date

Rio Yaqui (Lot #4310, Plan #4017/A, 1915/32, 6S-diner, ex-Plan #2412D 16S Nooksack, North Coast Limited/SPdeM Nogales-Guadalajara service)--retained (1948)--sold to Louisiana & Eastern (1955) was reportedly scrapped when the L&E folded

The L&E acquired 3 cars from Pullman in 1955-1956, including the surviving Plan #3959B/K Crystal Bay (line item #483) as well as the Plan #4025J/U Lago Seco (ex-Plan #4025A St. Louis Club, nee-Plan #2521 Mintaka). I have no clue where the Lago Seco went, if like the Crystal Bay it survived the end of the L&E.

Corrections & Another Survivor:

Conversed with Jacob Carey regarding these Pullman parlors turned NC&StL #730-series coaches/#740-and-#1100-series chairs, and realized as a result that there had been some confusion in the records regarding which cars were which and how many still survive. As such:

246. Millersburg (Lot #4649, Plan #2416D, 1922, plr [26]-1DR, PRR)--to NC&StL 68 seat coach #738 (1941) to streamlined 56 seat chair #740 for City of Memphis (1950) to L&N #2585 (1957) to Clinchfield RR #107 (19??) to Seaboard #322 (19??) to Great Smoky Mountains RR #322 Bryson City (19??)

489. Bridesburg (Lot #4649, Plan #2416D, 1922, plr [26]1-DR, PRR)--to NC&StL 68 seat coach #737 (1941) to streamlined 56 seat chair #742 for City of Memphis (1952) to L&N #2587 (1957) to display in Lynnville, TN (19??)

Before I had the Bridesburg as line item #246, specifically as the #107/#322/GSMR/displayed in Lynnville. Jacob corrected that all 3 of these cars that the GSMR acquired from SBD are still on their roster, and that the Bridesburg was indeed the car now in Lynnville. This meant that the late Jerry LaBoda was correct in his listing the Millersburg as the #107/#322.

Note that Jerry does have one error, that the CRR #101 is the former Bridesburg, which instead is the former Loudonville (line item #245); Jerry also has the name incorrect as Loudonburg.

This means that only 2 of the 10 cars streamlined by the NC&StL remain unaccounted for; 7 survivors now plus 1 scrapped:

Lilac (Lot #4691, Plan #2416D, 1923, plr [26]-1DR, NYC)--to NC&StL 68 seat coach #736 (1941) to 56 seat chair #719 (1947) to streamlined #743 for City of Memphis (1954) to L&N #2588 (1957) to MofW ??, scrapped by CSX at Owensboro, KY, in the late 1990's

2 unaccounted-for cars are:

Kewanna (Lot #4649, Plan #2416D, 1922, plr [26]-1DR, PRR)--to NC&StL 68 seat coach #732 (1941) to streamlined 56 seat chair #1101 for City of Memphis (1947)

Lilly (Lot #4649, Plan #2416D, 1922, plr [26]-1DR, PRR)--to NC&StL 68 seat coach #735 (1941) to steamlined 56 seat chair #1102 for City of Memphis (1947)

More Survivors:

The second of these two cars has come up in mention on this forum in the past as being in the collection of John Larkin/E&LS at either Wells or Escanaba, MI, and I inquired to get confirmation of this in the Surviving Passenger Cars group. While I have not received confirmation as such, I am still "penciling it in" with mention of it being as such on RYPN as of 2005. (I had also mentioned this car as a potential survivor in this thread back in April 2016, referencing info regarding the car in Dave Briggs' "Private Passenger Car Annual" from 1980.)

The first car was part of a second inquiry regarding 3 cars acquired by the Erie Mining Company from Pullman in 1956; Bob Moen replied that he recalls this car is also part of the E&LS collection.

Any further confirmation of such for either of these cars would be appreciated. Even so, I have given both line item numbers for the sake of record-keeping.

490. Sunbeam (Lot #6076, Plan #3975B/E/N/S/W/E-1, 1927, 3C-1DR-buf-lng-obs-sol, Sunshine Special)--retained (1948)--to Erie Mining Company Taconite Trail (1956) to J. Larkin-E&LS and stored at Escanaba (unknown date)

491. Centsalva (Lot #6205, Plan #3979A, 1928, 8S-1DR-2C)--to SOO (1948) to #1258 (1955) to Historyland, Hayward, WI (unknown date) to Historic Dakota Central RR, Madison, SD (July 1976) to J. Larkin-E&LS and stored at Wells (unknown date)

Link to old RYPN thread regarding now-scrapped sister Centburne (line item #279); the Centsalva is mentioned in the last post by Dennis Storzek: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18097

Update:

Inquired about the various cars owned by Reuben Darby-Darby Wood Products in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, and received a reply from James Corbett concerning the following:

318. Moore (Lot #4833, Plan #3523/A, 1924, 6C-3DR)--retained (1948)--sold to Reuben Darby-Darby Wood Products (1967) resold to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS-Lake Shore RY Museum as ENEX #4828 (unknown date)

James remarked that the Moore was heavily vandalized and scrapped.

(Note that the Moore is one of a few cars in the Chapter collection which to my knowledge were never moved from storage at GE in Erie to their current museum location in North East, PA...now I know why the Moore did not make the move.)

(Still looking for info on what happened to another unaccounted-for car that the Chapter acquired from Darby, the Poplar Trail [line item #320].)

(There are 2 more Darby-owned cars which are still unaccounted-for as well, the Fir Park [line item #319], which at one point was owned by Strasburg after Darby, then listed as resold to an unknown party; and the Glen Farm [line item #321], no clue on who acquired that car from Darby.)

As forwarded to the Surviving Passenger Cars group by Isaac Pena:

105. Golden Peak (Lot #6125, Plan #3959A, 1928, 3C-2DR-lng-obs, ex-Crystal Peak, Overland Limited/Golden State Limited)--retained (1948)--to Lucius Beebe & Charles Clegg and rebuilt to business car #100 Virginia City (1955) resold to Nevada Alvarado Corporation (unknown date) resold to Wade Pellizzer-Virginia City Rail Corporation (#800313) (unknown date)

This car has now been resold to Michael Presson and another party, will be going back into regular PV service, and will be moved from its current home at Salinas, CA, up to Oakland.

More Info:

The various cars owned by Reuben Darby-Darby Wood Products came up in discussion in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, with a lot of detailed info regarding the following car in particular posted by Alan Maples:

57. Schubert (2nd) (Lot #4833, Plan #3523K, 1924, 6C-3DR)--retained (12/31/1948)--sold to Ruben Darby-Darby Wood Products (1967) to NCTM
Alan shared the following info
Alan Maples wrote:
Further comment on Pullman "Schubert". This car and another Darby car (ex-B&O heavyweight dining car, unknown number, converted to an office and named "Green Castle") were parked at the B&O's Camden Station in Baltimore where they were sold at auction on April 18, 1968, to satisfy an unnamed creditor (possibly the B&O). The buyer was Nathan Mash who owned a meat packing plant in south Baltimore and who paid $7,700 for the Schubert and $18,700 for the Green Castle.

Both cars were auctioned again on July 15, 1975, after the meat packing plant was closed to make way for construction work on I-95. The buyer was D. Robert Clapper of Hollidaysburg, PA, who paid a total of $13,500 for the two cars for a proposed railroad museum and 30-acre development to be known as "Pennsy Village." Mr. Clapper's plans fell through and the cars, still at the meat packing site, were auctioned again on October 30, 1975. So far I have not found any record of the buyer(s) or how the Schubert ended up in North Carolina and whether or not it is still there. I also have not found any information about the disposition of the B&O dining car.
Alan Maples wrote:
I've confirmed that the Schubert is still at NCTM and was donated to the state of North Carolina in 1978 by Nathan Mash, who had stored the car at the B&O Railroad Museum after it apparently failed to sell at auction.

More Info:

In the same conversation regarding the cars owned by Reuben Darby in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, Alan Maples posted a newspaper clipping which mentioned the following 2 cars:

These 2 cars were mentioned as assets of Darby that were seized by the B&O and sold at auction in February 1970. I had previously not seen/heard any mention that either of these cars were owned by Darby. Darby planned on rebuilding cars for the usage by various owners as PV's, so therefore I wonder if these 2 cars were actually Darby-owned, or were "under contract" for rebuilding for their respective owners, were at that time being stored by Darby, and therefore were caught up in the legal actions between Darby and the B&O. I did have prior notation that the Rising Gorge had been seized by the B&O in 1970, so that aligns with the info Alan shared.

It should be noted that the former North Gate was listed in the clipping as John A. Hewlin instead of John A. Hulen.

Alan also provided the following regarding the ownership of the John A. Hulen:
Alan Maples wrote:
Rail Travel Association (not Associates) was Walter Loftin of Alexandria, VA. He owned two cars - the CB&Q business car and the former EJ&E office car 50, which was an ancient ark. I think he bought the Burlington car when he found he couldn't take the EJE car on the road.
Alan went on further to post a second newspaper clipping listing all of the Darby assets seized and sold at auction by the B&O, to be forwarded to here in a following post.

More Info:

In furtherance regarding the cars owned by Reuben Darby, as discussed in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, Alan Maples posted a second newspaper clipping listing the Darby assets seized by the B&O and sold at auction in February 1970.

Many of these cars have been discussed in this thread at various times. Parties that acquired assets at the auction, the prices, and the current status of the individual cars to be listed as follows:

Turaco to John Basiliko-Alexander Motor Inn for $5,200 - this is not a Pullman name, nor has this car ever been mentioned here prior, no current info

ex-NYC 0-6-0 to Maryland Metals Inc., scrap firm in Hagerstown, for $500

Sara Jane to Maryland Metals Inc., scrap firm in Hagerstown, for $500 - this is not a Pullman name, nor has this car ever been mentioned here prior

321. Plan #3523C 6C-3DR Glen Farm to Maryland Metals Inc., scrap firm in Hagerstown, for $800 - this is one of the only Darby-owned cars which I did not have current info for; the fate of this car now seems much more certain

Derby Club to Maryland Metals Inc., scrap firm in Hagerstown, for $500 - this is not a Pullman name, nor has this car ever been mentioned here prior, car was apparently ex-C&O Pullman

Suters Tavern to Maryland Metals Inc., scrap firm in Hagerstown, for $700 - ex-C&O diner

318. Plan #3523/A 6C-3DR Moore to B&O itself for $700 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #4828 and stored at GE in Erie, scrapped sometime in the 1980's

320. Plan #4084A 6S-6DB Poplar Trail to B&O itself for $600 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #5983, no current info

154. Plan #4084A 6S-6DB Poplar Summit to B&O itself for $1,000 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #5980, resold to Iowa Pacific as SLRG #9166, now slated to be scrapped/has been scrapped

296. Plan #3523C/L 6C-3DR Glen Pond to B&O itself for $1,100 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #2829, later to Louisiana Steam Train Association

192. Plan #3523A/K 6C-3DR Donizetti to B&O itself for $700 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #1892, later to Mad River & Nickel Plate, resold to Iowa Pacific as SLRG #9167, never left Mad River & NKP, now resold in 2022 to Colebrookdale RR

152. Plan #3585/C/L 10S-1DR-2C Lake Terrell to B&O itself for $1,500 - later to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as #3930, planned for lease to Iowa Pacific as SLRG #9173, never left museum, lease later cancelled

baggage car only listed as "CCS" to B&O itself for $300

"DWZ #81" to "other buyer" for $1,550

ex-CB&Q/FW&D business car General John A. Hulen (again, listed as John A. Hewlin) (ex-Plan #2521B/E North Gate) to "other buyer" for $2,200 - as posted before, scrapped at Leesburg, FL, in the early 2000's

216. Plan #2502A business car Boston (later NP #6/Jefferson River) as the Rising Gorge to "other buyer" for $1,550 - this is likely to L.V. "Rocky" Rockafellow

"antique coach" to "other buyer" for $1,550

B&O caboose #C2603 to "other buyer" for $525

131. Plan #3523C 6C-3DR Glen Blair withdrawn from auction - stored for years in Brunswick before going down to Leesburg, FL, scrapped there with the Hulen

More Info & Update:

Again, while discussing the various cars owned by Reuben Darby in the Surviving Passenger Cars group, info regarding these 2 cars was posted by Maunsel White and James Corbett.

296. Glen Pond (Lot #6182, Plan #3523C/L, 1928, 6C-3DR)--retained (12/31/1948) to Reuben Darby-Darby Wood Products (1967) seized by B&O (1970) to Lake Shore Chapter NRHS as ENEX #2829 and stored at GE in Erie (unknown date) to Alfred K. Nippert-GATOR Rail Tours (1980's) later to Louisiana Steam Train Association and stored (unknown date) reported by Maunsel White as having been scrapped (2020's?)

Jim Corbett mentioned the Nippert ownership, which I was previously unaware of, but it does provide an answer as to how the car ended up in LASTA ownership (there is at least one other car now in the LASTA collection which they acquired from Nippert).

Jim also mentioned Nippert ownership for the following:

104. Meadow Lark (Lot #6352, Plan #3991A/B/C, 1930, 3SB-2C-1DR-buf-lng-obs-sol, Lark)--sold to NYNH&H #760 (1948) to business car #3 (1954) to Willis Barron-Ashland Court Motel, Ashland, PA (1964) to Doug Brown and stored in Gettysburg, PA (1982) to Alfred K. Nippert-GATOR Rail Tours (1980's) to Chesapeake RY Association and moved to Walkersville Southern RR, Walkersville, MD (2005)

I have heard that the LAKE TERRELL (Plan 3585; Lot 4770; 6-23-24) in the collection of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society has been given to a scrapper. Does anyone know if this is the case? It is a great car - only one side has significant side sill rot and the interior is complete. I tried to post some recent photos of the car to no avail - sorry.
