When the 0-8-0's were donated to IRM, I got a call from J. David asking Diversified Rail Services to assist the IRM Steam men in getting all the locos and equipment out of the mill. We were given a very short window - 60 days I believe. We prepared the locos to be moved to the grain mill siding in Galt. One was pushed off the end a storage track - the mill brought a 300' boom, 600 ton crawler crane by and reached over one or two tracks, picked up the loco and set it back on the track. It rolled a half turn of the drivers and everything locked up and slid . . . . .
all the way to Galt!
Another engine was sitting with only the #1 and #4 drivers in it. There was no way C&NW would move that loco. We scrapped it on the spot. I referred to Ron Ziel's great book "The Twilight of Steam Locomotives" to see how NWSW had scrapped CB&Q 2-10-4's as Ron had photographed. IRM wanted the cab and backhead for display at Union so we cut across the firebox in front of the cab. I forget the engine number, but recall it was a 1927 LIMA and had never run at Sterling - it was only scavaged for parts. I cut all the way down to the mudring and never hit a piece of scale. The boiler was clean and in great shape -so sad. I tried to replicate several of Ron's scrapping photos -and have a shot of the top half of the boiler going into the melt pot up on the furnace floor. I told them the sand dome was still filled with sand and the boiler was lagged with "industrial insulation" and they replied, "no problem. All that stuff will float"!
During our time at Sterling, there was a boiler explosion one sunday morning. It seems 2 CB&Q 2-10-4? boilers were placed in the shops boiler house and were still in use. One of the auto water pump systems failed and the boiler dropped the crown sheet. We drove over to that area after we heard about it - but not a trace remained - the area was sanitized very quickly. Details were hard to come by.
It was great to drive through the plant and see red-lensed Mars lights on posts for crossing flashers. And tender frames used as flat cars.
I bought the sets of drivers from the engine we scrapped. They are now spread around the country as displays at Bellevue Ohio and a few other spots. The best use was the driver that the "Engineer" sculpture is "oiling around" in Durand, MI.

Thanks very much for the six photos. Considering how long the old girl has been sitting there in Galt, she doesn't appear to be in that bad of shape. Can't understand why they moved the tender, but left 8305 there. Maybe if we knew where the tender went, we'd know who now owns her. Or what their plans are for her.....if there even are any!

Happened to get a couple of photos forwarded to me today and found this one of the 8305 back in April of 1963:

She looked a little better in those days working in her second career for Northwestern Steel & Wire. Note the non-GTW headlight. Sure hope this "last of the Lost Engines" finds a suitable home.

Hey! Look the first car behind the tender--it looks like one of Virginian Railway's big 100-ton capacity, 12-wheel "battleship" gons! None of those survived into preservation--darn!

The 05 engine was just uncovered this past month at Galt when the elevator cleared land for the construction of a new 100,000 bushel grain bin.It hasn't changed much from the pics taken 5+ years ago.Apparently the Quincy deal didn't work out?

There are several sets of axled drivers in an office park at Kennesaw, GA, within walking distance of the museum housing the Civil War locomotive, 'The General,' did any of them come from your efforts?

That seems to be the $64 question. And it seems that no one has the answer....or cares! Meanwhile, GTW 8305 just sits there.

VERY old thread, but there was a note on the AOTT website just today that said that the 8305's tender wasn't moved, but was in fact scrapped. Still begs the question of who owns the 0-8-0. You would think that IRM would have the answer; either who the engine was sold to or if they, in fact, still own it.

I've been told that there was an attempt to move the tender, but it fell apart right on the spot.

Thanks for your initial post to Interchange. Welcome! Interesting info on 8305's tender. Wonder if any photos exist? And if it DID fall apart when an attempt was made to move it, it means someone tried to do it. Perhaps we might find out whom that someone was which might tell us who actually owns the locomotive itself.

I asked the person who told me about it, and he said that it was most likely a moving company contracted by the town of Quincy.

Seems to suggest that Quincy owns it, or at least did at one point.

Been meaning to post this for a while but i was searching r/AbandonedPorn on Reddit seeing if i could find an assortment of abandoned railroad equipment and just by chance came across an urban explorer who took pics of GTW 8305 still in Galt. According to the OP the pic was taken April of 2021. While the poor 0-8-0 has seen better days she's the last GTW P5B 0-8-0 and part of one of the most complete sets of any steam locomotive in North America. Anybody know who officially owns her or who to contact?

Also meant to mention as of 2021 GTW 8305 has been moved from her long time waiting spot down farther the stretch of track she is on according to sources on Flickr. She has been more than likely dragged using equipment the company who's land she is on and I can't imagine one bit of the locomotive still moves and is probably seized up from almost 45 years OOS.

Did some more digging today and found a Facebook group dedicated to the area which had some posts from about a week ago about the loco.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/sterlin ... 047303927/

"I had heard it is owned by the Illinois Rail Museum (they have another NWS&W steam loco twin on display). This supposedly has a broken frame and boiler and cannot be moved. It was allowed to be kept there for parts, but will probably rust away.
There are at least 3 other NWS&W steam locos that were rehabilitated and on display in the US. This unit also was probably not a working loco, but Dillon bought it as scrap, so it was done when it got here decades ago"

This one made me laugh.

"Someone should of gutted and renovated it into a bar/grill."

Sad thing is i don't think they were joking.

Steam locomotive.info lists the locomotive as abandoned.
