VMT only has the A-tank currently leased to Fort Wayne. While N&W 1118 is very much a back burner project for us with everything else going on, if anyone runs across a spare USRA 10,000 or 12,000 gallon tender, we'd appreciate further info about it...

Somewhere someone needs to correct a list of CRI&P tenders.
See the last entry on this IRM Steam Blog post.

Even though this forum is near abandoned, I just wanted to mention CP 2816's aux tender, from a Delaware and Hudson 4-6-6-4 1609

Probably not surviving, but these tenders did survive for a little longer and thought they may be of interest. One from the CPR, the other from the MILW

It looks like an IC 2600 tender.

What does?

I don't believe any tenders off of an IC 2600 still exist. Not sure which tender mentioned in this thread you are referring to.

Les, I'm sorry, but this is a "no-brainer". Both us and VMT have been focusing our collections regionally or locally over the past few years. We currently own 17 pieces of equipment. All but one (a Great Northern passenger car, and it is for sale) originally operated within a 100 mile radius of Roanoke. Even if any of us were interested, do you think our Board would approve spending the 15 to 20 grand necessary to move a non-authentic tender here? The chances are "slim and none". If we can find something that can be modified into a close replica of an N&W tender, that's a different story. By the way, 1151 is the only M2 with an authentic tender. The one behind 1134 in Portsmouth is an N&W 16,000 gallon tender. None of those were ever used behind M2's.

Gary -

I was going through this thread and found your reply from September of 2011 to a suggestion I made that perhaps N&W M2 #1118 might use a Great Northern Vanderbilt tender that was being offered for free at that time by MOT. Just wondered if the 1118 ever got her N&W tender?

Thanks.

The Southern Pacific 982 tender is without its mate in Heber. The display where 982 sits is to small for both engine and tender so the options where to either. Scrap the tender, Cut it in half for it to fit, Or donate it to somewhere that needs it. The chose to donate it. It had many parts essential for an oil burner still on it. So with the HVRR converting to oil they thought this would be a good idea. The tender though is to big for any of the engines. As seen in the photo below. Also years of park display was not good to it. When I saw it it was rusted through in many parts. But the oil bunker was intact with heating elements and gauges. It also retained its emergency shut of valves. For some odd reason this oil tender had a emergence valve at where it went into the loco witch is where the only 1 should be but the 2nd one was where they loaded the oil on to the loco. There shouldn't of been one there. But the HVRR doesn't seem to mind as now they have valves for both of there steam engines now. The tank is going to be put inside the once coal bunker of 618 is what I hear. But no promises to that.

Photographer Credit goes to Parker Wilson a great guy who volunteers many hours at the HVRR.

I just read a 1976 article from Trains about the original auto train that showed what was ID'd to be an old GN 4-8-4 tender being used for a steam boiler car. I wonder whatever happened to that.

Not GN, but NP. Auto Train acquired 5 BN steam generators from J. Simon & Sons in 1973. 2 were nee-GN (1 of which was built as a steam car in 1928, the other was a former express boxcar) and 3 were nee-NP, rebuilt from Northern tenders. All 5 were renumbered from the #13x-series to the #113x-series in 1977. BN had sold these 5 steam generators to J. Simon & Sons in 1972.

The 2 nee-GN steam cars were:

#132, ex-BN #3, nee-GN #3 (StLCC, 1928).

#134, ex-BN #9, exx-GN #9, nee-express boxcar #2525 (GN, 1947, rebuilt 1951).

The 3 nee-NP steam cars were:

#130, ex-BN, exx-NP #H-1, nee-Class A Northern tender #unknown (Alco, 1926-27).

#131, ex-BN, exx-NP #H-2, nee-Class A Northern tender #unknown (Alco, 1926-27).

#133, ex-BN, exx-NP #H-4, nee-Class A Northern tender #unknown (Alco, 1938).

Theme Trains' Auto Train roster page does not list any disposition information for these 5 cars, at this point I'm thinking all 5 were scrapped following the auction. Does anyone have information regarding either the original NP numbers or the final dispositions of these 5 steam generators? Thanks in advance!

DLMX #4219 was built in 1942 by Baldwin as the tender for Class AC-10 Cab Forward #4219, 1 of 40 such engines (#4205-#4244) in that Class, which were built between January and July 1942. After the #4219 was retired, its tender was reassigned to rotary snowplow #206 as SPMW #7206B, and later became water car SPMW #4764A. Water cars #4764A and #4764 were assigned to fire fighting service on the Natron Cutoff (Cascade Summit) and based in Eugene. SP donated both water cars, with the #4764A refurbished in time for the 1984 World's Fair Daylight. The #4764 was sold to the CP #2860 group; I don't know what tender the #4764 was converted from, or if it was used as a water car for the #2860.

Like the #4219, the #2575 was also converted for fire fighting service and based at Klamath Falls (later renumbered to BN #973165). Here's a photo I took in August 2013 of the #2575 from the northbound #11 Coast Starlight, showing application of the GN Goat Herald in progress:

Here's an older photo of the #2575 taken by Richard Glueck, as found on steamlocomotive.com. Dick, do you recall when you took this photo?

Ted, I shot that during one of the National Science Teacher Conferences in St. Louis, during the late 90's or very early 2000's. Wish I could be more precise.

You know, looking again at the photos of PRPX #2575 and the GN tender in St. Louis, I'm now thinking these are not the same tenders. For example, on the #2575, the slope of the fuel segment comes close to meeting, or does meet, the vertical sheet extending up from the flank/top of the water segment. On the St. Louis tender, the slope meets the vertical sheet/partition just below the top of the water segment (the fuel segment on this tender is shorter in length than that on the #2575). Second, the water segment on the #2575 is much shorter than that on the St. Louis tender, on this mystery tender there are also 2 side steps leading up to a centered roof hatch. Lastly, the air reservoir on the St. Louis tender is smaller than that on the #2575.

So, that being the case, I wonder what the identity/history is of the St. Louis tender? Anyone know?

Thanks in advance!
