Some years ago, some of my associates and I were kicking around the idea of new steel open window coaches, for tourist line or excursion service. What we came up with was something very similar to cars like these. An arch roof that would shed snow and be easier to build, simple interiors which could be easily customized, different seating, heating and lighting options, modern air brakes (ABDW?), and more substantial roller bearing trucks.

These B&A and RI cars came to mind, as did the LIRR Ping-Pongs. And did I say more substantial trucks??? We were thinking about offshore builders, and doing assembly here, which in today's climate would not be politically or economically correct. Never got beyond some drawings and proposed specifications. but I still think there is some merit to this idea. Those CNJs, Lackawannas and RDGs aren't going to last forever. Of course, we have to get past this pandemic.
