I can’t help but to think about our #8 while I work on #6. Same transmission, same type of crew, same hills and curves. 6 has a worn transmission input shaft bearing/bushing. #8 got scrapped for a transmission failure. Hmmmmm.

Now, maybe, #8 had an input shaft gear failure. Maybe this is the weak point of the, otherwise, bulletproof Plymouth transaxle.

Either way, I’ll get this problem fixed before Little Mo goes in to service.

Got the clutch apart.

What a mess. There is wear on the outer hub from the steel clutch plates (I circled the problem areas) and wear on the clutch output shaft splines from the friction plates. Several other worn areas need to be welded up and machined back to the correct size. Plus two new bearings in the clutch release bearing assembly.

My son wants me to just replace the whole Plymouth clutch with a new Mechanical PTO. I have a feeling that route will be cost prohibitive. So, I’ll plan on getting this clutch repaired. I still asked for a price on the PTO. We’ll see what they say.

Also have the instrument panel removed and disassembled. Another mess.

I’ll rebuild it with new switches and gauges. I’m keeping the stamped metal switch labels though. At least the ones that still pertain to equipment on the Loco. I’ll also calibrate and certify the brake gauges on the deadweight tester. Keep everything legal!

P.S.

Eric

This is probably what’s happening with your Plymouth clutch that won’t disengage well. The plates get stuck in these worn grooves and don’t move around properly. Also, not sure if yours has a clutch brake. That would need to be repaired also.

Very interesting. I’d love to learn more about the process. As much as I love machines, I love the human perspective that created those wonderful and, ever changing, spaces between the letters. Gives me a connection to that poor sap who punched these out in 1939!

Any thoughts on how you’ll deal with the worn splines yet? I certainly have a key interest in knowing. I’ll pass this info along to our CMO so we can plan our future attack. As nice as the torque converter is, an operable clutch would be a huge plus in ease of operation.

I’m going to consult some of the machinist guys at the RR and see what they think. I’m thinking that I’ll weld it to add material and have one of them machine new splines.

Mark.

Mark,
On the worn ring - do you think bad shifting, or just wear and tear?

Hey Mike!

Didn’t know you were on here.

Looks like normal wear and tear. I went through all of the extra clutch parts we have and found a few clutch shafts. All have the same wear. I guess Plymouth just didn’t decide to harden the contact points. I just got a price on a mechanical PTO that I think I going to go with. Uses a modern tractor trailer clutch assembly inside, has obtainable replacement parts, and will use the current bellhousing on the Cummins engine. It’s going to cost more up front, but I believe it will give better service for us.

Plus I was worried about hanging that Plymouth clutch and flywheel off the back of the 855 crankshaft. That setup weighs around 500lbs without including the bellhousing weight. Plus, what if that spinning 500lbs isn’t perfectly balanced when the new engine is spinning it faster than the original engine?

Lots of benefits to going with the newer system. The new setup is 290lbs including the bellhousing.

I’ll keep all the original parts for Mighty Mo spares.

Here are some updated pictures. The rear engine mounts are done except for the bottom holes. I’ll have to drill them when the engine is in its correct position.

Next will be the front mount, then the engine will be ready to install.

I also have all of the new gauges. I’ll post pictures as the instrument panel starts to come together.

Looks like you’re making decent progress. I can hardly wait to see how this all comes together.

Thanks Eric!

Here’s some progress on the Instrument Panel. Still have a lot of work to do, but this will be the general layout of the gauges. Not done sorting out what all I want the row of switches on the left to control. Plus I’ll need a spot for the ignition switch.

We’ll call this the “Rough Draft”.

Fixed some of the problem areas. The gauges had some extra holes and gaps around them in their new location. Off to the blast shop tomorrow.

Small update.

The dash is back from the blast shop. Sprayed the primer, paint, and clear. Waiting for the clear coat to set up. Will start installing the gauges tomorrow.

Picked up a nice used compressor setup today in East Philly. Feel like it’s a nice move forward.
Two Quincy QR25 #325’s. Small compressors, but really high in quality and duty cycle. These will be a nice addition and will outperform Little Mo’s original air compressor.

Making progress on the instrument panel also. Will post better pictures tomorrow.

Got the compressor apart. Was surprised at the weight of these compressor pumps. 190lbs each, not including the flywheels. Guess they are built to last!

By complete luck, this air tank is very similar to the dimensions and capacity of the original fuel tank. I’ll modify it into a proper fuel tank. Saved a ton of $$ there.

Still not 100% happy with the switch layout on the instrument panel. Getting closer though. I’ll post pics of that when I get it right.
