Any of our overseas members have any recent information
on General Steam Navigation?

Well, let's see.........

The back of the photo says "Cheadle, Staffs." which translates into the terminus of the rather short LMS ex-North Staffordshire Ry. branch southeast of Stoke. The branch is long gone, but the Foxfield Light Railway is just a mile or three away going northeast up a different valley........ I'm willing to wager that this is a photo of the "last run" on this branch. I'm not sure the second photo is of the same occasion, possibly a departure from Cheadle itself--I don't get the "same date and occasion" references--but "1Z16" was a "headcode" commonly carried by a lot of one-off BR excursions (such as "last runs") in those days.

And damned if the Cheadle Branch doesn't have its own Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheadle_Branch_Line Assuming this is accurate, a 1962 photo isn't a final trip.

44871 (not named prior to the end of BR) later hauled (along with 44781, and later 70013 solo) part of the last steam passenger run under British Railways auspices, the famed "Fifteen Guinea Special" of 11 August 1968.

The 6100 photo is no doubt Canadian Pacific turf--look at the locos in the background. To a whistle expert, just the whistle behind the 6100 is enough! And if memory serves correctly, the loco that actually came to American shores was a sister to the actual 6100, with 6100's plates.

There is an Otto Perry photograph of 6100, dated October 17th 1933, at Denver Union Station in "Denver's Railroads".

The beeb's radio program Witness recently aired an episode about this train. Here's the link: BBC Witness - The Fifteen Guinea Special

Please note that the original post was made in 2007, by one of the co-founders of this page--who had a propensity for posting lots of photo links at the same time to vintage photos, whether the subjects were preserved or not.

Some readers loved them, while others shared the "what's the point?" response.
