Ironic title since dying was what motivated Samuel Morse to invent the telegraph. Morse had been working in DC and corresponding with his wife via mail. After sending what would be his last letter to her, Morse received a letter a couple of days later from his father, informing him that his wife had died. Upon receiving the letter, Morse immediately left Washington for home. The trip took six days and when Morse arrived, his wife had already been buried. Morse decided that a quicker form of communication was needed and eventually invented the telegraph.
