Post subject: Track Pans for Steam Locos
PostPosted: Wed Apr 15, 1998 2:42 pm

A few years ago, after seeing some of the exhibits at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on water troughs or track pans, I picked up a very informative publication from the gift shop there on this subject. One bit of information the article did not address was what trackside sign or signal told the cab crew when to draw up the scoop. For that matter, what indicated to them to lower the scoop at the right time, especially at night? Simple questions. Maybe someone with a steam-era NYC or PRR rule book could look it up.
P.S. Apparently British Railways used them even up to the 1960's.
