Headquarters for the convention will be the Ogden Union Station, formerly served by Oregon Short Line, Utah & Idaho Central, Bamberger, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Amtrak. This unique museum hosts an antique car collection and the Browning Gun Collection, as well as numerous railroad exhibits.
Pre-convention activities will begin with an overnight trip to Ely, Nevada, home of the Nevada Northern Railway. The Nevada Northern was operated by Kennecott Copper, as part of its open-pit mining operation. In 1983, the railroad's support facilities and equipment were donated, totally intact, to a local preservation group, which has operated "The Ghost Train" since that time. We will have the opportunity to tour the railroad facility and ride the "Ghost Train" behind double-headed steam locomotives, through Robison Canyon to the Keystone mining district. On the outbound motor coach trip, we will stay at the State Line Hotel and Casino in Wendover, for an evening of gaming and other entertainment. The package tentatively includes bus transportation, soft drinks, cash back, food and drink coupons, "lucky bets", and a free Keno ticket. There will be a box lunch on the return trip. This entire package is available to attendees for $85.00. Space is limited, so reserve your spot early!
Thursday's pre-convention activities include an outing to the Heber Valley Railroad, the 16-mile remnant of Denver & Rio Grande Western's Provo Canyon Branch. A box lunch will be served aboard a train ride which will include double-headed steam and photo run-by's. The outbound bus trip will be through the Salt Lake and Utah valleys, and the return bus trip will traverse Weber Canyon, route of Union Pacific's original transcontinental main line. Cost of this excursion will be $32.00.
The convention will begin Thursday evening with the opening reception in the Union Station West Annex. Cost of this reception is included in your registration and guests may attend for $10 each. The annual business meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, followed by concurrent breakout sessions Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Planned topics include a legislative update, F.R.A. steam-locomotive and other regulations, stretching your trackwork dollars, cultivating motion-picture and television business, keeping the spark alive when working with volunteers and other important topics.
Saturday afternoon, we will visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit, where we'll be treated to a special re-enactment of the 1869 driving of the golden spike and other activities! The cost for this excursion (including coach trip and box lunch) is $22.00. The Saturday evening banquet ($25.00 per person) will include entertainment by one of the country's top cowboy poets.
The Ben Lomond Historic Suite Hotel, lodging headquarters and venue for pre-convention activities, is located at 2510 Washington Blvd, three blocks from Union Station. Standard Suites are offered to convention attendees for $75.00 per night, single or double occupancy. Ambassador, Luxury and Sky Suites are $87.00 per night, and Family Suites are $120.00 per night. Honeymoon Suites are $110.00 per night. Additional adult guests can stay for $7.00 per night, and children 17 years and younger stay free when accompanied by parents. A full American Breakfast Buffet and a Complimentary Managers Social (5:00-7:00 weekdays) are included in the hotel rate. Courtyard two-bed hotel rooms (not suites) are also available, at $55.00 per night, single or double occupancy. These rates do not include a 9.25% accommodations tax. Please book your rooms directly with the hotel at 888-627-8897 (toll free) or 801-627-1900. FAX number is 801-393-1258. Availability and pricing of this block of rooms is guaranteed through October 15, 2000, so please reserve your room(s) early. For inquiries regarding hospitality suites or other special needs at the hotel, please contact Holly Schwitzer, Sales Director.
In addition to Convention activities, attractions such as the Hill Air Force Base Aerospace Museum are nearby for your enjoyment. Salt Lake International Airport is a major Delta Air Lines hub, and is also served by other carriers. Amtrak's California Zephyr also serves Salt Lake City. Rental cars and shuttle services are readily available. Please refer tourism-related questions to Kathie Adams, Ogden Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 800-255-8824 (toll free) or at 801-627-8288.
